Hi, I took my '54' reg c class for a 'A' service at my local 'indie' garage, when I picked the car up I asked the man about the mileage until the next service, he said if you drive the car normally and not hard you will get between 12,000 and 15,000 miles, went to the car, looked at the instrument panel and before I drove off it read 10,000 miles, went back to see man and told him, he said that when you start driving and doing some mileage the reading will gradually increase, bearing in mind the panel now says 8,600 miles to next service and it was only serviced 2 months ago, plus I always drive my car in a conservative manner, (I,ve got a motorbike for the faster stuff).
Any replies on this matter would be appreciated.

Did they use fully synth oil? It needs the oil type setting when the service interval is reset.

Having said that, if it's out of warranty and you're using independants for servicing then it's a bit irrelevant - just ignore ASSYST and get it serviced when you feel it needs it.

I would do as Rory says I think, by adding a little new oil it will extend the intervals, the service indicators do work in a strange way,,mine showed 900 miles to next service for 3k miles

Mine is an 05 reg and it's always reset to 10K miles at each service although I actually get just over 14K miles between services i.e. 100 mile count down on the computer = 140 road miles.

If the ASSYST has been set correctly fro MB spec fully synthetic oil then it should start at 13K to next service and depending upon how you drive it not count down mile for mile. I never saw mine increase the miles to next service however it would do 2 miles and count down 1. I would take a stab that it hasn't been set to the correct oil. Having said that however there are a few on here with W211's that only show 10K to service and count down mile for mile. Mercedes have switched to fixed 15K or 1 year services for the new cars. As I don't believe they were getting enough revenue form variable services which could go up (in my case) to 18K between services.

This is only in the UK where they have switched to fixed intervals.

There was a guy complaining in my MB dealer last week that he had only done 7k miles and the lamp was on,, the MB man told him that they had found that cars were unsafe when left for more than 12 months without a service

They switched to fixed interval in the US a few years ago - at the same time as the dropped free servicing for first 50K miles, which is the norm for "premium" cars in the US.

Mine ran 2yrs between its last services and the dealer service manager said I really ought to bring it in every year and he could change the servicing to fixed interval (15.5K/12mths, which would mean 12mths for me). I said OK, but will ServicePlus cover the cost? He said "no"!
