Ran out of petrol last night. (about ten miles after warning light first came on)

Light came on while traveling to work yesterday morning after I spent an hour in heavy traffic.
Thought I would have enough to complete journey to and then from work. No garages on my route.
I literally made it to the front door, after it cut out and I rolled the last few feet. 'phew'!

Damned annoyed though that the miles remaining was still indicating +30 odd miles, while empty. - Not even close. What's the point ?

Mine is always the other way around, the CLS with the pump attached comes up and I've driven for many miles after this event.

There is no separate reserve, it is just called that from the time the lamp comes on, and all reserves should be in the order of 10 lioters

Fill up before you hit the red or yellow on some cars, now that you have run out the pump has sucked up all the sludge from the bottom of the tank & it's in the filter!

With me, if the fuel is getting low and I am miles from home, I always do the last bit of the journey in economy mode to make it last, just some odd mental problem that I have, and have always been like it

Trip and miles remaining very accurate in my experience. I normally refuel at approx 1/4 left.

You aren't, by any chance, from around Chester? It's just that, while I was waiting for some parts at Mercedes Chester this morning, I could hear someone discussing this very problem with a tech. I didn't stay to hear what they had to say as my parts arrived but if it wasn't you, you aren't alone.

I hate hearing people say "I never let the tank get less than a quarter" etc (Sorry quoted poster, not having a go!!)

It's potentially 20 litres, 4 gallons, 150-200 miles, that's being wasted if you needed it.

The W124 always gets driven for 50 motoways miles or 35 town miles after the light comes on. Then I'll refuel it. I don't think there's any chance of sludge in the tank as the Maestro takes no issue with it, nor the 405TD or 280E...

I don't have a trip computer to deal with, but once the guage hits the first of the red lines on the Maestro, I know i've still got 120 miles in the tank! On the Merc, 50 miles, maximum.

I'm a stingy sod though, I have it so it's cutting out and coasting onto the forcourt!!!

Sorry, old skool me...

I don't like to run the tank low as it may be full of crap/water whatever..

Any remaining fuel isn't "wasted" it provides the level for the re-fuel :)

On the tanks that I have removed (petrol) they have been a clean as a whistle,, diesel is something else that I have nothing to do with
