Hi guys, I'm a humble Peugeot owner, but I'm led to believe the intelligencia own Mercs, so it's here I've come for assistance. Can anyone tell me where in the North (of England) I can get a prop shaft shortened/balanced?

Thanks, Mike.

Most modern Peugeot cars are front wheel drive and don't have propshafts, but here is a link if you want one

Shorten my 505? mmmmmm now theres an idea. No, well not this week anyway! I've got a 203 (Peugeot from the 1950's), and am trying to squeeze everything from a 505 GTI into it. When (or should that be if) I ever get it up and running it should be quite entertaining.

Cheers, Mike.

Oh, while I'm here, another question. Can anyone explain (in very simple terms please) how a remote brake servo works/is piped and do any recent cars use them.

Thanks, Mike.

The only brake servo's i know about are piped up to the inlet manifold to create a vacume which asists(sp?)the servo. Not sure if this is called "remote" or not.

you can get new remote servos from some of the mini and triumph tuning places iirc. or is it rover places?

plubing:-
pipe from master cylinder to remote servo (RS)
pipe from RS to brakes.
Vacuum pipe from inlet to RS

look on www.howstuffworks.com for how it works (the 'normal' type)

Progress is extremely slow. In fact if there's a word that means slower than slow, it would fit the bill. Anyway, I found someone close to home to shorten the propshaft - this guy rebuilds Spitfire engines! (As in WW2 fighters).

When I was at his place I was amazed at the stuff he does - he's got a 12 cyl Merlin (I think) engine mounted on a trailer with counter-rotating props. What a clever lad he is! He's also got a Griffon, and another that I can't remember the name of.

I've managed to squeeze in the 505 brake servo, so obviously I don't need a remote one anymore, but as space under the bonnet is becoming very tight (that's an understatement) the airflow sensor will need to be lying on it's side, ie turned through 90 degrees. Will it still work correctly in that position?

All help greatly appreciated,
Mike.

depends on the type of air flow sensor it is - if its hot wire, then yes, no problem. if its a flap type, then probably not...

the name gives it away when you look through it (hot wire is just a tube with a tiny thin bit of wire in it..., flap types are usually a large(ish) box

He should be re-christened Useless B@st@rd!

"Useless" isn't the apt description, but it's the one I find myself using.

When I dropped off my propshaft I told him there was "no hurry to get it back".

Seven months later, it's ready to be collected.

Well, a kid could have done it. For that matter I could have done it.
Apparently, " he who shall remain nameless" gave the job to "some apprentice" who has since gone into something called I.T.

The propshaft was 7mm too short, and, basically, errm what's the word,

Shafted?

USELESS BASTARD are still the words in my head, but if anyone can come up with better.....................................

Why not get a 7mm spacer made up for the flange that bolts to the rear axle and use longer bolts to secure it to the axle. Any machine shop should be able to turn a piece of metal and drill four holes in it for you.

Unfortunately that's not possible with a Pug. 505 propshafts run through a tube.

The tube was shortened by the correct amount (by the man himself) but his glamorous assistant cocked up his bit.

Anyone got a 505 GTI propshaft lying about? Cheap?

I don't expect a rush of replies, apparently there are less than 100 still in the country.

Anyway,

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Mike.

Thanks. It was a lot of hard work, but well worth the effort. Actually got it finished Christmas 2010, and it's run very well since, only broke down twice - snapped accelerator cable (my fault, I had it pulling at a funny angle) and the damned propshaft stripped its splines (obviously it's tricky shortening one:roll:)

That's what the nice man in the unmarked Volvo thought it was too when he caught up with me. :D:D:D
