I recently had a TomTom installed in my wife's E240 (2001) estate by a well known high street auto accesory supplier (H). Apart from needing to reenter the radio code after the fitting, all seemed to be fine until I wanted to drive the car 3 days later. I tried to adjust the mirrors and guess what happened? Nothing! The switch that closes and opens the mirrors worked fine but the joystick felt stiff and when I tried to switch from left to right mirror it felt as if the buttons had become glues together. After some pressure they moved in and out as before but absolutely nothing happened with the mirror positions. It looked as if the joystick toggle had become damaged in the fitting process but I think that is a secondary issue because I can feel and hear the switch clicking but no movement of either mirror occurs. I have been back to the store and they have said sorry and if Mercedes say it is their fault they will pay for the repair. The problem is my wife needs the car over Christmas. So three questions:

1. Is there a fuse for the mirrors that the fitter may have blown and if so where is it located?

2. The joystick switch will have to be replaced so is it a reasonably straightforward process to remove the central consol? It looks typically well built with no obvious signs of how to remove it.

3.How much is a new switch likely to cost and where can I obtain one pdq?

Many thanks Michael

I have now checked the fuses - they are OK. Can anyone tell me how to remove the joystick switch mounted on the central consol?

Thanks

Michael

Remove the centre console like that, and check the back to see that all connections have been correctly re-installed.

The console just unclips with a sharp tug upwards.

Thanks - your tip was perfect.

I removed the consol and all wiring looked to be in place. As fuses all OK as well the problem may be in the wiring close to the steering wheel that I think was removed in order to route the new TomTom power cable. Can you tell me how to remove the panel to gain access to thjis wiring and any connectors that I should check? My hope is that I find a connector in the mirror wiring loom disconnected but no doubt it will not be that simple!

Not sure where you mean but have you tried contacting the company who did the install, and insisting they repair it?

Yes I have contacted them - I took the car back and all they would say is that I should take the car to a Mercedes garage and if Mercedes say that it was the installers (Halfords) fault, then they would pay for it to be put right. Unfortunately that is not very helpful on Chistmas eve!

Probably not much more they could do on Christmas eve though. Try and find a good dealer though.
