Don't look at in terms of just snow , a cheap set of winter wheels and tyres have distinct safety advantages below 7 degrees c and make your usually more expensive summer tyres last twice as long .
I was monitoring temps where I am at the times I drive. The purported benefits of winter tyres would have been of use less that 60 days in total over the winter to date, and they were spread over 120 days. Last year the ratio was even less favourable to justify winter tyres being just 20 days. It makes no economic sense for me to invest in winter or all season tyres as I don't think there are any all season or winter tyres A rated for wet weather and that is far more of a concern than cold temperatures. In the event there is snow I'm also able to work from home and can just leave the car on the drive.
Whilst I accept winter tyres are useful for some they aren't worth the outlay to me at present.

Had a bit of a look this morning to see what sort of money was involved for decent all season tyres for my S204 on staggered 17's. I can find 225/45 for the front, but not 245/40 for the rear, so that idea is on the back burner for now!

Virtually all of ours has already melted, roads are wet but drying, it's about +6 ATM and tomorrow is forecast for +8 - positivly balmy!

I've deviated from Conti to Mich (normal tyres) for the C Class and I have to say I am not all that impressed with them. They are wearing quicker and no more quieter than the Conti's I don't see where the extra £15 a tyre is worth it..??

I have just taken a set of Mich tyres off the wife's ML and replaced them with Toyo's which I have found to be excellent. Pirelli on the front of that at the moment and they coped ok in the snow.

As for winter tyres I too have had nothing but good reports on the Vredisteins. One of my customers swears by them and runs them all the time.

The Goodyear Assy3 is a better tyre and very quiet, but value wise Uniroyal RS3 can't be beaten

I'm not a fan of Contis - put some on the 968 coupe years ago, ran at the recommended pressue (proper tyre gauge, not the compressor one) and the centre of the tread wore out in no time. Changed to Bridgestones and all was well. Also had them on the S204 when I bought it, very noisy, changed to Goodyear Eagle F1's and car is whisper quiet and lovely. Will have to change the GY's in the not too distant, would love to go All season and sell my winter wheels (southern softie!!) but can't find 245/40 R17 so must see if I can find a reasonable alternative for the 8J rears.
