Hi All,

Can anyone help? I want to change the ATF in my Yr. 2000 ML270 CDI Tip Tronic transmission. My intention is to change the filter as well, so I will drain and remove the transmission oil pan and replace the filter.

What I am after is a suggestion on an easy way of draining all the oil in the system inc. the torque convertor, oil cooler etc. Also I dont have a trnsmission dip stick so what is the correct refilling capacity once I have managed to drain the complete system.

Do a search on here i think! you have to remove one of the oil cooler pipes and stick it into a container and start engine.

Not done it this way i have just drained and refilled, approx 2.5 litres ish.

Filters gen merc on e bay for about £20 incl gasket.

Pic of dipstick below most people use net curtian wire, its a pain to check level after just filled as the oil on the side of the tube mess,s up the dipstick readings.

You will defo need the stick to get accurate reading, bottom 2 marks cold top 2 hot min/max.

The TC drain plugs were discontinued circa 1999 so its possible that your 2000 registered ML may have one if it was manufactured in '99 ..........check it out.

note........Renew the rubber sump gasket.

I have to replace the AC condenser so will have to remove the oil cooler anyway. Is the trick to disconnect the cooler and run the engine until the ATF stops coming out? Will that not cause damage to the Gearbox?

Also does anyone know how long the total length of the dipstick should be as I got one from the States but it is far too long.

The length doesn't matter as the dipstick bottoms out on the sump tray of the transmission. Push it in till it stops, then withdraw etc. The two sets of markers indicate hot and cold levels.

Sorry to butt in here..
When checking the fluid level do you have the engine running?
If so is it in Park or Neutral?
Thanks..

Yes, engine running and in park. Transmission fully up to temp to use the top two marks as max and min. :)
