my ml 270 had a starting problem 2 weeks ago it turned over fired a little shut off then carried on turning over for about ten seconds more not firing up sometimes it would just keep turning over with no fire up ,SO i took it to main dealer and they diagnosed a problem with the ecu and a drive train sensor that picks the gears etc any way picked it up today £1400 quid lighter (should have been 40% more but mb contibuted to repairs ) and hey presto same problem booked it in with merc assist to get it towed but it finally started so its home now but going back to the dealer first thing IF IT STARTS any advice or help would be appreciated

My advice would be to ask for a refund of £1400 for starters as that clearly was money wasted on something that wasn't needed in the first place.

Oh dear another post like this, they are getting all to common, yes ask for your money back as they have mis diagnosed the repair.

You just cant let them get away with it, you gave it to them in good faith, but were not competent to do the repair. do demand a refund and your old parts back

Be it a car, a washing machine or the lawn mower, I am sick of paying so called experts to diagnose faults and replace parts only to have the problem remain and for them to utter... must be the doodar then , mate , they can also cause that fault.
They are just using my wallet to cover their lack of knowledge or expertise.

ok today mercedes assit send out a tech guy to see if he can fix it ,now the ecu shows up a crank sensor fault this is replaced and the car is fine the part is 90 quid which they havent billed me for because i just paid 1400 to get it fixed in the first place ,would it have been ok before if it just had the new sensor ? why didnt the old ecu record this fault and not just come up with replace the ecu ? what are the chances of getting some of the money back ?/ slim i think !!

99% of these starting faults are the CPS and never the ECU

Two trains of thought:-
1. So called experts are not experts.
2. So called experts mis-diagnose to generate more income.

Certainly sounds like namcrem should go back and demand his money returned, but it would be very easy for a technician to damage the ECU (apply a high AC voltage to the Crank Sensor Input for example) and claim that the old CPS damaged the ECU.

The whole dealership game is one of 'Owner beware', hence quite some time ago suggesting a database for members to log experiences, but no doubt this could be abused.

Best suggestion is namcrem approaches the dealership and see what they will offer, if 1. above they might feel guilty, if not, then 2. is the answer, avoid the dealership in future!
