Hi,

I have ML270 2002 and I was wondering whether it is safe to give my car in to a local mechanic for an oil change. My concerns are that to change the oil filter may require a specailist tool and the local mechanic may mess it up?

Regards,

The tool required to remove the oil filter is common place, it can be bought from any car shop for about £5 and most garages none MB would possibly have one.
Easy job and only takes 5 mins to remove sump plug and change filter.

Thanks for the advice. What oil would you suggest to use?

Hi,

Is it something I can do myself? I have the oil filter, the Mercedes one and it is boxed. If looks very light and appears to one made out of carboard. Is it a matter of undoing a bolt and replacing it?

Remove the undertray from the car, remove the top covers on engine, 13mm sump bolt, need large container as there will be alot of oil in there.
Always replace the copper washer on the sump bolt, remove the filter cap, filter slides off and there are 3 rubber seals that will be with the filter they need to be replaced.
Let oil drain for some time (best hot) replace filter and sump bolt and refill with fresh oil, keep a check on the levels!!! Handbook will tell you the amount you need.

Thanks for the details.

Is the oil filter located close to the sump bolt and does it just come out when the remove the filter cap or do I need to undo a bolt?

I have changed the oil on a Ford and I used a tool like a small metal pole with a chain to losen the filter. What sort of tool is required to do the oil filter?

Every one seems to have forgotten something...

Go to local MB dealers service dept and purchase at least 8 small plastic under tray retaining screws and shrouds. These WILL break when you remove them.

The oil filter on most Mercs is located up high in the engine bay and usually easily accesible. Don't forget to use the new o ring and sump washer. Be careful not to overtighten the sump plug and please ensure to take the used oil to the local mechanics for recycling. You may have to pay a small fee for the garage to accept it but it is worth it for the environment, yourself and everyone else.
