HELP PLEASE.

I have a wierd question for the experts.
I have an ML270 and I had an HID headlamp conversion fitted today.
The car was in limp home mode and I was looking under the hood to see if I could see anything.
The engine would only rev to 2800 and this only happened after the lights were fitted.
I called the auto sparkie for a clue and he said to check a certain plug which he disconnected and perhaps forgot to re connect it.
BINGO connect plug and all was 100% again.
Whilst I was revving up the engne to check I was getting full RPM I noticed that the top rad hose was sucking almost flat.

WHAT IS GOING ON WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS.

Your help PLEASE

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike
I have had the same problem & was advised to change the top hose which I did & is OK now, don't ask me why I have never see this on a car before I just carry the old as a spare.

Malc you say "There is a modified bottom hose for this car complete with clamps" I haven't heard this but I'm interested to know more

Thanks Kevin

You are OK it did say 2000 on modified hose and clips,,hard to get your head around that one, there is also a modified clip for the hose on the expansion tank that can leak

Flat Hose

The hose sure feels SOFT and I mean SOFT.
The water level is fine but I think I will change both hoses just to be sure and see what happens.

I called Merc and they said "perhaps the water pump impellor has fallen off" and "there is also an auxuillary electric pump as well, we will need to see the flat hose and do a diagnostic test on the car" What a load of cobblers, if the impallor fell off there would be no suction, no pressure, no nothing.

I do not think they seem to know.

Mike

If it is soft as you say, then that is the problem for sure. The only other thing that can cause such a phenomena is for the pressure cap breather to block/not operate. That then vacuums the system after the motor cools down. Not likely for you though with the soft hose. Replace it straight away before you blow the hose apart. Soft = stuffed!!

Flat hose findings

I was bothered about this flat hose syndrome and late last night went out to the garage to check it out.

I checked and looked at everything you could think of and as a last resort checked the pressure car and YES YOU GUESSED IT, IT WAS LOOSE>
The garage had left it not tightened when they serviced the injectors on aturday.
I tightened it and went for a run and when hot the pressure in the system now keeps the hose from sucking flat.

I have ordered a new hose but I now know the reason and I will fit the new hose when it arrives as it is no use lying on a shelf in the garage..

There is light at the end of the tunnel but it is a bl**dy long tunnel.

Thanks again guys it is nice to have people to bounce your ideas to.

Thanks again.

Regards.

Mike
