Can anyone tell me whether you need specialist tools to replace the rear shocks on a 2000 ML 270 or can my local mechanic do it ? Also any ideas where to get a pair at sensible money. These are for number two son and he has a tight budget. Thanks in advance Barry

I don't think you will need any such thing which will be expensive. Even if you go to any professional it will be inexpensive.

Hi

You will need spring compressors. It is a coil over shock set up at the rear of an ML and it can be reasonably difficult to buy shocks independent from the springs.
MB want serious money for them as a unit.

Couldnt get the springs witthout the shocks a few years ago when i was looking. Ended up buying second hand. Search around things have changed now i think,

Hope this helps

2003 ML270 sold but not forgotten. 2022 Kia EV6 RWD LR
Bilstein will sell excellent shocks without springs attached. Much better than the KYB shocks supplied on US built versions.
Some spring compressors won't work with the rear MB legs as the spring coils are closely wound. The compressor springs won't fit between the coils. Better to use a full outer compressor for the job.
Tricky job to R & R the rear legs too - will take you a few hours. Have to remove the spare wheel and carrier to access the top nuts on the leg mounts. Expect some skinned knuckles:( I have done it many times trying to use adjustable Konis to no avail - finally used Bilsteins and they are great.
