Has anybody had one of the many avilable plug in systems on a cdi?I'm considering buying one(assuming i fix leaky injector).Seam to be good gains for little cash and diesels always tune well.Mainly interested in fuel economy gains

Most of the ones you see around just trick the ECU into thinking the fuel pressure is lower than it actually is. So you end up running higher fuel pressure whick injects more diesel than it did at the same point before. NOTE that the overhead trip computer will be out when you do this, and it (and you) will think you are using less fuel than you actually are.

So the only economy gains you will get are from the marginally better atomisation of the slightly higher pressure fuel. But you are also able to use more fuel than before so it may be cancelled out and exceeded by your right foot.

It is a risk, and IMHO isn't worth the hassle as the ML270 is pretty grunty at stock levels unless you have other issues. The fuel system will wear out and/or break faster due to the higher average running pressures, and the transmission will have to cope with additional torque, which is the thing that really wears them out. Note that in the manual version of the ML270, MB actually backed the engine torque off 5% to protect the gearbox. So if you go and increase yours by 10% or more it is an expesive risk to take.

I run one on my E 270 CDi for last 12,000 miles

Reading this got me thinking, If you are looking for more fuel effiency then surely the only way to check the MPG is to use the old full tank to full tank method and do the maths. Distance covered divided by fuel used. Recent tank full 608 miles 60.91 litres 45.37 MPG Trip readout was 40.4 MPG anyone explain this? NO MOTORWAY CRUISING ON THIS TANK. With regards to POWER / Ecconomy More useable power means that to drive the same you need less right foot, however most of us will use the extra power and ther by negate any finacial gain.

Yes but less right foot in this case means you are injecting the SAME amount of fuel as before the mod, because the fuel pressure is now higher. And that extra power you are using is causing extra wear.

But each to their own, it is all just friendly advice since someone asked the question.

The only real way to go is to have the ECU map modified, so that everything stays normal, except for extra opening time on the injectors (will wear out quicker) and possibly extra boost from the Turbo.

Many companies out there who will take your map and change it. With the KWP2000 tool, you can suck out the map yourself, get a tuner to change it to your whims, them flash it back in, all through the OBD port.

As per Malcolms comments in a similar thread though , extra power will mean more stress on the drivetrain and engine block. When you have more power, its hard not to resist using it!

Oh good, I was hoping that would work on my car, cause some of the KWP2000 supporting ECUs don't allow the sucking out part, only one-way flashing.

Can you confirm that it works on your ML270 psmart?

Yes it does, BUT, you must disconnect the electric fan and put a regulated stabilised charger onto the Battery whilst doing it (at least the programming part).

The KWP2000 works on the ML270 and the C220. I have my ML map and the tuned map for the MY2001 car. The tuned map takes it to 220bhp and a tad short of 500 lbs/ft torque!

Not going to program the C Class though as the manual boxes cant take the torque and not sure if the Automatic boxes can take it, so keeping the ML at the original program.

Oigle has had good success with his map though, albeit it wasnt programmed for outright power.
