Hi,

Two days ago my ML 270CDI (2004MY) suddenly went into power down mode where engine revs are now imited to 2000rpm under load and 3000prm no load.

I suspected the AMF sensor and had it replaced (with a genuine MB part) but with NO result.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

I have fully checked out the air intake circuit from filter thro intercooler into EGR for any disconnected pipes etc but it all looked OK. Even cleaned the EGR as it looked a bit caked up with oil and made sure the vacuum diaphragm was functioning OK. Still no result.

Does anyone know if the service interval indicator is not rest, does this make engine go into a power down mode after 11,000?.

I would greatly appreciate any help to resolve the above problem.

Cheers.

Replacing parts by trial and error is expensive.

The service counter will not cause a limp problem.

Take it to a Independent garage to have any fault codes read.

Theres lots on this forum about this engine, but areas to look at:-

1. Change-over the BPCVT (left hand side, next to the ball shaped vacuum reservoir, has two pipes going in at top, what looks like a petrol filter dangling at bottom, and two wires) with the similar unit on the right hand side of the bulkhead (EGR control valve). This fault would show up if you get the codes read (P1470) but the simple swap-over would test to see if it was. Also check the state of the air filter below the BPCVT. If you look down at the turbo, you will see a rod, if you rev the engine, this will move up and down as it controls the turbo vanes, if this is not moving (only look when you start the engine because once it goes into emergency mode, it stops controlling this arm) then the BPCVT could be faulty, or the vacuum system could have a leak.
2. Check the air-filter on the car (red - blocked, white ok).
3. Have you heard any rattling from underneath the car? The cats break up and restrict the exhaust which would cause this problem.
4. Inside the inlet manifold are a set of plastic flaps which block off the inlet during overrun and are controlled by a motor just below the inlet manifold. The flaps do break and can restrict inlet.
5. Check that the boost pressure sensor, right hand side of the intercooler is connected and not popped out. If its failed, will show up on a code read.
6. Check the sensors in the common rail bar are connected (will show up on a code read if faulty/disconnected).

Have a nosey at some of the basics above and if not simple, then get the codes read. My guess is 3 or 4 above, because when the turbo control is disconnected I found the engine still to rev freely above 3000rpm (off load), so something is restricting it.

No problem. If you tell the good folks here where in London you are based, I'm sure they will reccomend a garage near you.

Many thanks for the very detailed check list. :D
I will check the various parts as instructed. I will also update with my findings so other readers can also benifit.
Best wishes

Thanks.
I work in Park Royal. Have been recommended SPIROS Motors (Bosch Service) in 4, Sunbeam Road NW10 and was going to give them a try if I don't fix the problem with the check list provided in other post.
