I am looking for a single alloy wheel for my ML 430 (2001). Interested to know the following:

1. Is it possible to fit two different sized tyres: 275/55/17 and 255/60/17?
2. Where can I find such a wheel cheaply?

Thanks,

RG-R

Hi,

You can fit both the 275/55 and 255/60 on the 17" alloys, my car originally came with 275/55 but now have 255/60 Snow Tyres on permanently.

As long as the tyres on the same axle are identical, you could mix the two, but Im not sure if it would affect the vehicle (ie. Transfer case).

Ebay (if you cant find in the UK, try www.ebay.de) is the best source for Alloys that Ive found.

gives you comparisons between different tyre sizes and profiles so you can see what will match in respect to gearing.
Using different width tyres front to rear could cause unwelcome handling effects - under or over-steer. I would suggest you should not mix sizes either side to side or front to rear.
I have found narrower tyres seem to give better ride and steering effects on my 2003 ML. I have changed mine from 255/60/17 Continentals to 235/65/17 Yokohamas and have found much more compliant ride and more accurate steering with less "tramlining" on uneven surfaces. Better in wet and muddy conditions too. Reduces aquaplaning and bites through slush to firmer base. An added advantage seems to be better tread wear too, so far.
