New to ML's, keep seeing model numbers rather than 270,320 etc, such as 163, 164 etc what years/models are these ?

The 163 & 164 relate to chassis numbers, you can take a look at the time line here although it may not be 100% correct it is a rough guide.

Hello,

The 163 is the older shape, available from around 1999, facelifted with the indicators in mirrors etc around 2001.

The 164 is the newer (current model)

The 163 in the UK was available as

ML270Cdi, ML320, ML430, ML350, ML500, ML55

the new ML (164) Is available I think as ML280Cdi, ML320Cdi, ML350, ML500, ML63

Hope that helps

I've just bought a ML350 inspiration (163 version) and love it.

Only picked it up Saturday , hope its close to the Navara which was almost 32 average.
Will fit my own towbar as it is all just bolt on using existing holes

Hello,

Just worked mine out and its the first tank so I've been pressing the go pedal quite a bit and its 22.5 (for a ML350)

So if your only getting 24.7 out of the derv I'm glad I went for petrol, cheaper to buy and I get the petrol vrrrooom with a V6 sound..

Cheers

Not as cheap as my fuel, the reason I went for a diesel is because diesel is free, £0, nothing, nowt .......... so I can put up with a diesel roar more than I could with a petrol vrrrooom.:)

My Ml270cdi when last checked was doing 29.8 mpg, mixed driving and all below 80mph.

Not bad and not bad sound wise, lot better to live with than the 4.6 V8 Range Rover I had at 15mpg if lucky, mind you that sound....

Mine manages around 25mpg.
I read all the figures before buying, and was expecting closer to 30, but I reckon all manufacturers figures are deceptive.
My previous Sharan Tdi auto gave nowhere near VW's claimed return.

With 4wd and all that weight, I'm actually very happy with the performance of my ML270 - it certainly gives better economy than the BMW 328i.

We had our ML270 (Facelift) for about three months now and we are getting about 25mpg, this is all town driving, although the on board computer said 29mpg!! i think it's telling lies.:D

So am I and the roar the engine makes while under full chat and the pulling power ! Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

Agreed, the engine feels and sounds superb.
Not quite like a V8, but the 5 cylinders give a lovely burble under full throttle.
Also notable is the absence of 'metallic rattle' that comes with so many diesels.

Interesting to read the economy figures, it would seem the facelifted 270 w163's use more fuel.

I only ever got ~22mpg in mine at 125mph (chipped) flat out down the A3 for majority of the journey and that was using the Ultimate diesel, which reduced consumption in my car.

A typical journey sees ~30mpg and we have had it upto 40 with the Turbo disconnected. A colleague who regularly drives my ML gets high 30's but drives it like a pensioner. (My ML doesnt have a computer, so its good old fashioned tank-tank).

The facelifted w163's had a drivetrain change, aka transfer case power split which I wouldnt have thought would cause that much of a problem. Anyone know why the facelifted 270's drink more?

My facelifted 270 averages around 30mpg on mixed town/country running. Around 22.5 with a 1600kg caravan on the back at 60 mph. I have no issues with economy - by the way, that is with a chipped ecu supposedly producing 495nm and 140kw. The chip hasn't changed the economy noticeably. I love the extra responsiveness with the chip. Driving habits change economy noticeably - I mostly drive with economy in mind.
