I would get the fault codes read to try and pin point the problem - could be several things.

I recently had a similar problem and had to replace the inlet manifold and inlet port motor (that shuts the flaps in the inlet manifold) This gives a loss of power similar to a MAF fault. It was reset when I restarted the car but got worse over time to a point were I could not get it out vof limp home mode.

I was also told that battery problems resulting in slightly lower voltage can cause the gearbox to put the car in limp mode

I had both my Cats taken out 3 weeks ago. I have covered over 1500mls since and no problem or increase in noise that I have noticed. :)
