I BOUGHT A NEW ML270 MARCH 2004, IT HAS NOW DONE 21,000 MILES & USED 8 LITRES OF OIL. MY LOCAL DEALER SAYS IT IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CAR!!!!!!!!
HAS ANY ONE ELSE GOT THE SAME FAULT?
IF SO HOW ARE YOU GETTING ON?
I'M TAKING A LEGAL ROUTE UNDER THE SALE OF GOODS ACT 1979, AS I DO NOT BELIEVE THE VEHICLE IS OF SATISFACTORY QUALITY i.e. the goods do not meet the standard that any reasonable person would expect, taking into account the description and price etc...
The vehicle has not been sold to me AS DESCRIBED i.e. i was not told that i was buying a '2 stroke deisel' Perhaps I should fit a retro-market header tank for long journeys???????
ANY HELP & ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, MY LOCAL DEALER ADVISED ME THAT I AM THE ONLY ML270 OWNER WITH THIS PROBLEM
THANKS

Ian,

You may find us to be a more friendly bunch if you DONT SHOUT, your compliant is against MB not the nice people of this forum :)

Two things come to mind. Firstly, assuming that you are saying that you have had to top up a total of 8 litres over 21000 miles, your consumption is well within MB's published limits. Whether you think that is reasonable (which I don't) isnt what matters here - it is within their tolerance. Is the car fit for purpose, of course, did you read the handbook before your purchased, of course not. Did you ask the dealer if the car might use lots of oil, of course not, if you had what would he have said - he would have told you what it says in the handbook.

The second point is what is your chances under the sales of goods act - thats an easy one - not a chance in hell. To put it into context, if you had the car for a month, it broke down every day, every possible fault you could think of occured - you still wouldnt win. It is so important to the motor industry to ensure that no one ever wins one of these cases (cos it would open the floodgates) that they would continue to fight the case until you run out of money.

Finally what should you do? Keep topping up the oil and consider a Land Rover or BMW next time :(

Mark.

My pennies worth is that my ML270CDI (95k miles) uses no more than 1 litre of oil between 13,000 mile oil changes.

" MY LOCAL DEALER ADVISED ME THAT I AM THE ONLY ML270 OWNER WITH THIS PROBLEM"

Surely the dealer must acknowledge then that there is a problem???

ML270 high oil usage

My ML270 used about 2 litres of oil in the first 10000k. It was using Mobil 1 0W/40. I wasn't too happy with a diesel running on what I considered to be a petrol engine oil so I changed it to Shell Rimula 15/40, a dedicated mineral diesel oil, which was within the viscosity range specified in the Benz Owners handbook for the temperatures I was running in. It immediately stopped using oil. I tow a caravan and work the motor quite hard at times. I am not a lover of synthetic oils, particularly during a running in period. Suggest you try a different, non synthetic, diesel oil as I have. Just as an aside, I have recently upgraded my engine management chip using "Powerchip", an Australian company's product, and have found a whole new world of performance. Torque up from 400nm to 495nm and power up from 120kw to 139kw. Cost is quite high - AUS$1380, or about 550 English pounds - but results are outstanding. Far better off the mark response and general acceleration is greatly improved. No noticeable decrease in consumption. Check out www.powerchip.com.au

Out of interest, what is your interval between oil changes with the mineral oil?

I am changing it every 10000km. Another benefit I noticed was a much quieter engine, particularly when cold.
