Hi folks, my ML270 has the intake manifold flap issue and I have a bit of quandary. I have spoken to Amir at MSL who has offered blank the inlet, ditch the egr and do a remap. Very nice chap and to me it’s a no brainer take it to MSL. The query I have is A. I can’t find blanking plates anywhere and B. It’s got 130,000 miles on it Is it better to get a new intake manifold fitted.
Your advise is very much appreciated.

I had my E270 (OM647) mapped at MSL at 80k and ran it to 160k before having to sell it (work reasons) so mileage wise I’d say go for it, I also had both cats removed at tourqueflow (in MSL) before the remap and certainly helped with spooling of the turbo and always passed its MOT without issues.
Re the inlet, if it was me personally I’d replace the inlet and do the remap, more because the swirlflaps actually help mpg and gentle throttle running which is still most of the time but doesn’t reduce power after the remap. Not replacing and just blanking is just a work around but gives similar results I guess but I think it depends on how long your going to keep the car, because you will have to replace it some day may as well do it now and have years of enjoyment first, just my opinion but let’s see if anyone else here suggests otherwise

Inclined to agree particularly if you delete the egr operation. It is the crud from the egr that does all the damage to the swirl flaps. As V6matty, I think they are worth keeping for low speed running. I removed the egr and the secondary CAT and had a mild remap and the result was very good. My manifold and flaps were still good at 100000km when I cleaned out the manifold and removed the egr, so I left them operating. Done 170K now and all is well.

Surely if the egr valve has been carefully designed to help keep the NOx compounds within breathable limits we should not be talking about removing them to improve performance, why not just make sure the thing is clean and functioning correctly ? they may be a bit of nuisance but they are doing an important job.

Yep - and when they aren't working properly as most old ones aren't, then we see the engines spewing copious amounts of particulates into the atmosphere - also a known carcinogen. In a perfect world where everyone kept their old cars fully maintained, I would agree with you but unfortunately....

Fair comment, I'm guessing that gunged up/faulty egr's are the cause of most of the smoky diesels we see on our roads.
A little ironic when you think about it.
