Can anyone help/advise me please?

My ML270 CDI (2001 & 90k miles) has been regularly serviced by MB and still has 7500miles to go on 'Assist'. It recently (2 weeks ago) passed the MOT with flying colours.

I have been told, that when I accelerate, there is a puff of black smoke and diesel 'smoke' is evident - until I ease off at cruising speed.

Is this normal - or an indication that the plugs need replacing?

I recently changed to BP Ultimate from Tesco's 'best' - to no avail.

Please be kind and gentle with me, as this is my very first diesel car...!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi There jez,
I would say is quite normal. Very heavy smoke my indicate a possible injector fault, but it is quite normal to get a bit of black smoke when accelrating hard.

Is that not the reason why the diesel exhaust end pipe faces to the ground because they do smoke on start up and acceleration, mine smokes if I stamp on the loud pedal, still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, had a kid in a Fiat Stilo last Sunday who tried to undertake me at some traffic lights, his engine was screaming its nuts off, I left mine in D did not even bother to put it in tiptronic and floored it, he was trying but gave up, who said diesels are slow.

Thanks TELEVISION.

I have just changed from an XJ Sovereign to this one - I can't honestly say I miss the Jag that much.
The ML is pretty quick for the Traffic Light Grand Prix and I'm only just now starting to understand its limitations. And anyway - you can only go as fast as the car in front, which isn't very quick 'darn sarff'.!

Besides, there are simply too many cameras about now that prevents sustained high-speed fun and frolics - my Snooper is almost constantly 'lit up' :(
