(ML270 - W163) I have a leak on the rubber garter/cover/seal on the gearbox lubricant/oil pipe.

Are these rubber seals easy to replace? Any tips, please?

I think it's for the gearbox, I'm happy to be corrected.

edit: should transmission oil be working its way back up the pipe? Does this point to another problem?

The 1st pic is the cap for the auto transmission filler tube.
Is the 2nd the pipe from that?
By perished garter,do you mean the wrap around grommet that is clamped by the b clamp?
If so, yes easy to replace, just one bolt, but it only protects from vibration so personally I wouldn't be concerned.

No oil shouldn't be backing up that.
Why do you believe it is?
I can't imagine a reason why it would, unless (very unlikely possibility) the outlet from the transmission pump is blocked and causing back pressure. In that case I would imagine the transmission to be toast very fast.

The tab on the filler cap snaps off the cap then pulls up and out.
There are flexible level probes on ebay that can then pushed down to check the level.
That wants to be on level ground, the temperature of the fluid will cause the level to vary. There should be temperature corresponding marks on the probe.
But I believe if over full it can just over flow. But worth a check.

The second photo is the trans oil filler pipe, yes. The seal (wrap around grommet - I'll learn all this jargon!) that is broken is, I believe, snapped in half and the top and bottom should be joined covering the shiny metal.

Here is a video showing oil seeping out. Ignore the large drips in the beginning, that's fuel from the injector post we've been discussing lol

I wouldn't have thought that to be expensive from an MB dealership. You could contact the likes of MB Grangemouth via ebay. They will often create an order for you.

I would 1st cure your fuel leak,
and with the area cleaned then look at other issues.
I use a lot of blue paper towelling, and white spirit in a spray bottle, and a paint brush to get in there.
When cleaner things might be clearer.

You could have a point. Maybe the fuel is bridging over to the pipe via the b clip and making me think there's a leak. I'll keep you informed ;)
