After reading about what my temperature gauge should be showing know have come to the conclusion that I need to replace my engine thermostat. After just completing a 250 mile trip without stopping I noticed the temperature never got above 60. Is it a DIY job to replace the thermostat? If so does anybody have instructions on how I do it. Also what is the cost of a replacement thermostat for my ml270 CDI year 2002.
Thanks

I would appreciate it if you could send me the instructions on how to change the thermostat. Also do you have the MB part number?
Thanks

Would you recommend a garage to fit the new thermostat or is it easy enough to do it myself?
Am I likely to do some damage to the engine if I'm not careful?

As these need to be water tight under pressure, if you do not feel happy doing it your self,, then have it done,, not to expensive

ML 270 thermostat change
This is a fiddly job & it's behind some plastic fuel lines
which could have hardened up & got brittle one has a
plastic tee in the line this one you need to be carefully
with (£50.00 for a new one) engine lift eye is just where
you don't want it, the thermostat casing has a full "O ring"
type seal in a groove so no probs regarding sealing.
Thermostat only comes with the housing a complete unit
about £45.00.
I removed my thermostat from housing so I could just replace
the stat they said you can't do that "it's here in my hand"
no you have to buy the housing as well:p

Malcolm
I had the new engine thermostat fitted to my ml yesterday and I have to say my car drives like a new one. It seems more responsive and off course the temperature is now running at between 80/90. Thanks again for the advice..

I did mine the other day no problem a bit fiddly and did have to take the oil filter out to get the new one in.

What a diferance it makes

Bought it on ebay £37.80 from GSF carparts

Themostat change

Hi

All was going so nicely until I snapped the Diesel tee piece.

Can anybody give me some advice on where I can get replacments, fuel lines all very stiff, any advice would be welcome.

Cheers

You'll need to buy the complete pipe from mb. A bit of a fiddly job as the pipe runs underneath the pump.

You may take the view that you want to replace all of the pipes at once if brittle

You would be well advised to buy a couple of replacement clips that fit underneath the pump as these will probably snap when you replace the pipe.

Smear the seals of the new pipe with a bit of grease to ensure that they don't snag when refitting.

If you haven't replaced it already, leave the top hose off until you have sorted the fuel lines- you'll need the space/ visibility.
