Hi guys,

I was hoping to get some advice if possible on an issue I'm having with my merc. I've owned an ML320 (W/2000) for around 18 months and haven't had any bother with it at all.

Last week i noticed it took a little longer to turn over before it started, it still started and drove perfectly. That happened a couple of times and it seemed to sort itself.

On Saturday we were driving into town, again the engine drove perfect, and all of a sudden the engine just cut out and i had to coast to a stop. Tried starting it again and it just turned over but wouldn't catch. About 15 mins later (i guess when the engine cooled a little) it started fine. The AA guy couldn't find an engine fault on his system and confirmed the engine was fine, and he followed us home to be safe when sure enough it did it again about 15 mins into the journey. So again, we waited, and a little while later it started again and managed to get us home without conking out again.

It's an electrical problem for sure and I'm guessing some kind of circuit board or something electrical has a loose connection, or is tripping, etc as it only seems to do it after the engine gets warm. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar problem with their ML or 320 engine?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Al

Thanks guys, it's a petrol.

The AA guy plugged in his laptop and he said it seemed as though the engine wasn't sparking at turnover/his screen showed 0 RPM even when trying to start it...

How much is it typically to sort this problem out?

BlackC55 i see you're in Pompey, I'm in Locks Heath if you can be of service.

Thanks

Give me a call or email.

Thanks

Hi there,

I have similar problem with my CLK 320 Petrol - 1998 S Reg with 60k on the Clock. I will be driving along merrily and the car just dies as if it's been turned off? It will start again immediately. My local non franchised (although merc specialist) garage has had it for 2 weeks and can find nothing obviously wrong with it. They have fitted a new brake light switch and i think they said an Air Mass Sensor. it does it every 4 or 5 miles and is now totally undriveable. The car has been fully serviced and before me was driven very infrequently by an older chap (if that makes any difference!!).

It has been plugged into their 'machine' and they get no fault logs / readouts at all.

I totally rely on the car (it's my wifes) and am at a loss as to what to do as i really cant afford the local (newbury, berkshire) mercedes prices.

HELP!!

If the car runs, but then cuts out and won't immediately restart but may after a short delay then with a petrol engined vehicle it'll be the crank sensor.

It's not uncommon on V6 and V8 engine vehicles in particular. Even at a dealers you're looking at only about £85 to replace including labour. So go buy the part from the dealer and get your independent to fit it.

It's possible that faults wont be stored as they may self clear when you manage to restart the car.

My 1999 ML320 had exactly the same problems with the engine suddenly cutting out. I fitted a new crank sensor myself and it has been as good as gold ever since. It only took about 10 minutes to fit. ;)

Crank sensor replacement has worked for me.

Just a note to anyone reading this to say that I too had experienced problems of the engine cutting out on my 2000 ML 320. I replaced the crank sensor myself (back left hand side of engine) 3 months ago and no problems since.

I've also just replaced the lamella roof - much easier than you would think.

Thanks

My issue is homing in on the engine and not the gearbox at all. The EGR valve is suspect: I just had it off and when closed was able to blow a "hiss" through it with lung power. I assume that it should seal tight in order to maintain the vacuum and I have just located a vacuum leak: can anyone confirm? (I've tried a forum search.)

Sorry: please ignore. Wrong thread.

Rather than go looking for your other post if there is one, if you can blow through the EGR valve, then it is U/S this will give a poor idle when leaking, do not waste your time cleaning as the spring gets weak due to the hostile environment that it lives in
