Hi. I've been looking into the ml exhaust and I might need to replace the second cat on the offside
I've searched local part factors and they don't list for the 5.0 but do for the 430.
Is this a mercedes only part and what's the difference on a 430 to a 500?

Thanks
Mark

Why not just delete the secondary cats? They aren't required.

Yep. Common mod on V8s. My SL has a single cat each side.

Is it just pre cat sensors so no second ones for post checks?

I can confirm the secondary cats can be removed without the eml being turned on. Its when the primary cats are removed the problems occur and the eml has to be mapped out.
If you are worried the ML might fail the MOT, the cats can be opened up, gutted and rewelded if you preferred.

I have yet to read of one car failing because of missing secondary cats. It will still pass the emissions test.

You have 4 sensors. 2 per bank with one before the first cat and one after the first cat on each side. There is no sensor after the second cat on either side.

Ok. Hence the removal of the second cats. If the contents of the first cat were not present is there an issue with the second sensor picking up no conversion in the catalytic converter at All?

If the first cat is toast the second sensor will detect it. The second cat has zero interaction with the sensors.

Has anyone managed to empty the first cats and adapted the system to not notice the issue?

Not recommended. It won't pass an MOT if you do.

Why would you do this if instead you can remove the secondaries without any hassle..?

Just general interest really on having a straight though setup. But I am aware of the mot complications so that option is unlikely to happen. I will definatly remove the secondaries though.

Thanks.

If you were to get Kleemann long tube headers for example, they come with no cats at all and its a popular mod amongst the 55K engine owners. You can get sports cats fitted which take away the need to have the engine light mapped out and to pass the MOT.

If you are looking to improve that V8 sound and you are somewhere close to Birmingham, give Imran at Torqueflow (withIn MSL) a call. Very experienced exhaust man and can advise accordingly the best way to get the sound you want wthout a drone.

Have a read of their reviews. Looks like their website is down at the moment.

I will look into that thank you. I'll travel for the right man for the job as the system is starting to show it's age across the whole thing and I'm looking into a stainless setup and as you say without the drone

I drove 160 miles each way to have mine done there. I wasn't disappointed.

I too, took my 55k to Torqueflow. Quite happy with the result, nice sound and now booked in for its second MOT since the conversion. No problems with the last MOT. A 300 mile round trip for me.
