I have a 2001 ML55 amg that is stuck in park on the auto gearbox. It has been fine but today i started it but it wouldn't come out of "P" on the gearbox.Could it be a sensor via the brake pedal?

Could be the automated lock.
You should have a slot near the gear gate and a metal bar in the tool kit (see the manual). Pop the bar into the slot and it should override the lock out.

Mainly Mercedes
You need a new brake light switch. This is very common.

The problem has to be on the selector, if it is showing R when its in P it wont start. the lever will also be locked under this condition. as it is showing R the fault cant be anything other than the selector cable being out of adjustment.

Well it could be the range recognition switch - after all it's this that tells the transmission control module the selector position - used primarily for the 4321 positions as the selector rod is disengaged here (there isn't a cable as such - it's a rod assembly).

The rod goes down to the box, but it is a cable that goes up to the switch, it should only be a matter of re setting it all.

Are we talking about the same thing Malcolm? There isn't a cable from the rod to the recognition switch - it's a fixed assembly.

Surely that's an electrical connection not mechanical?

It's a mechanical device? I thought the transmission control module controlled the starter lock out relay - the sender for this is in the electric control unit in the gearbox - an item that needs checking as the socket leaks ATF into the ECU harness.
