Greetings everyone,

I have a question regarding motor oil. I have a Mercedes-Benz C220 (W203) year 2001, Diesel, Automatic and it has 296,000 km (mileage) - I searched on Mobil1 official web site and used their search criteria based on my car's information and the site recommended 0W-40 Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Oil.

is it OK to use it in my car?

A friend of mine has the same car and he used it 0w-40 Mobil1 oil (with no issue)

When I asked my mechanic, he said that because of the mileage it's better to use 10W-40 (or 5W-40 at least)

Need your help/opinion on this matter and your recommendations are very appreciated.

Thank you.

Your engine has probably had that or similar all its life. The 0 means that the oil is thinner when cold than 5 or 10, the 40 is the figure when hot. If you do short trips often definitely use 0/40. If not use any of them suggested to you.

The difference between 0w and 5w is minimal in most of UK. It is noticeable at low temps e.g -30°c.

Only use a thicker oil if there is a consumption issue or if it's going on the Autobhan or track so being subjected to prolonged high oil temps where an oil can thin beyond it's grade .

And the 10W40 is often a lesser semi synthetic .

Not if it's MB approved.

One thing to bear in mind is wider viscosity oils can break down faster due to the longer polymer chains used to give it the low cold viscosity.
Valvoline used to do a 0W-50 which was notorious for doing this within 12k miles.

That's right , it's asking too much for an oil to be thin and thick and best choose a common application .

0W50 is as wide range in viscosity as it gets albeit unreliable .

Interesting.. I was wondering something similar. My S212 has had 0W30 all it's life but MB Newcastle are selling a 20Ltr 5W40 at a decent price, which they say is for all petrol engines.

I do a lot of short trips so I guess it's 0W30 for me... :) Thanks!

When your car was produced the spec was to 229.1 or 229.3, so yes this oil or to a later spec will be fine.
