In my view the initial post was regarding the validity of mobilo, but this seems to have (again) become one of those "lets bash main dealer servicing" arguments on the basis of simply to justify mobilo which it so clearly shouldn't.

I believe that you guys who prefer non franchised servicing and in particular those whose occupation relies upon it, are so clearly biased and should leave things for others to make their own choices and not berate main dealer servicing at every opportunity, frankly (and I dont complain too much in life), its becoming quite annoying, in a tedious kind of way, in this forum.

For the record I am more than happy to have discounted servicing at a main dealer and on the odd occasion something needs repairing (if I feel this way inclined) I will take my car to an indy......simple as. But I certainly wouldnt maintain a main dealer history simply for mobilo......but I would for other reasons.

Vent over
r

No one is bashing the main dealer, or at least I certainly wasn't, merely stating the fact that on 10 year old vehicles, having the vehicle serviced at a dealer to keep mobilo, which is one of the main dealers selling points for having it serviced there and I should know I was an MB Aftersales Manager for 4 years, is simply not good value for money, especially when mobilo has certain limitations that an AA package does not when it comes to choice of repairing workshop!!

On your 2008 CLS it maybe more palatable at present but I wonder how palatable if your vehicle had to be recovered to the dealer who then quoted you a £1000 repair for what could be done for 50% less at an independent...?? The old adage applies, you pay your money you takes your chance...!

Steve,
I have no particular beef with you. Your advice and support for those in here is absolutely clear, its advice that I too have benefited from in the past but it sometimes miffs me when so many threads evolve to become a main dealer bash and generally its the same few culprits, ( an hours reading will clarify).
Your final point "if your vehicle had to be recovered to the dealer who then quoted you a £1000 repair for what could be done for 50% less at an independent...??" is a clear eaxample, how d oyou know this, I have clear examples of similar charges for servicing and repairs between main dealers and indys down the years so your explicit point is simply not credible.
Personally, I have and continue to use both indys and main dealers thats my choice as you suggest but a wouldnt berate either as each serve their purpose on occasion.
What I would say is that Cheapest does not always provide the best value and a more savvy owner these days will percieve value as key.

Now, im in a great mood today and off to buy a new gun, will I be choosing the cheapest?, after all they all fire shells and go bang, No, I will be sticking with a
brand that has served me well in the past, maintains its value very well and feels comfortable when I'm out with it.

Have a great New Year and I sincerely wish you and your business every success during 2013.

And all this proves that there is no such thing as "Mercedes service" - it's all down to the individual that you deal with.

There seems to be some confusion over Mobilo and Mobilolife the differences are determined by registration date -24 October 1998 to 31 December 2003
This cover is not reinstated by service if you have missed a Main Dealer Service.
After 2003 its different.

Edit Mobilolife being the earlier 1998 -2003

How can you have a debate with everyone saying yes, I think that Steve's post was very good and it outlines what can and does happen.

So many different factors in this topic.
New car
How long are you keeping it
Do you love paying £110 plus vat per hour
Are you rich or are you poor
Do you value the info that a good indie will give you while its being done.
Do you like to drink coffee and see nothing through a glass window
Would you rather know nothing at all about any servicing.
Is the car 6 years old or more

I could go on but ;):(:D

Malcolm,
what a ridiculous post and goes to emphasise how one sided you appear...

New car - Why does this matter?
How long are you keeping it - Ditto save for someone just passing one over.
Do you love paying £110 plus vat per hour - incorrect - Discounts are often available and I reckon the odd indy has taken me for more than that in the past.
Are you rich or are you poor - Again - whats the point?
Do you value the info that a good indie will give you while its being done. A GOOD indy yes but thare are a load of bad ones too!
Do you like to drink coffee and see nothing through a glass window
coffee can be drunk anywhere????
Would you rather know nothing at all about any servicing.
Again where is the point in this?
Is the car 6 years old or more....discounts increase with cars over 3 years old at most MB dealerships.

Your points are yours and you are entitled to them but lets not ram such a load of 80110x down everyone else's throat eh....

Christ just when I thought sensible debate could arise in here the same cr4p I referred begins again....

Mods - bar me for a bit please.

Yes maybe, but it did seem to highlight the point I was making.

No real offence was intended so if any was taken my apologies are offered.

I favour one or another of anything, in fact. im so middle of the road I could have a dotted white line on my head.....I just hate seeing the views of some enforced upon others and this touched a nerve......Im off to watch some telly......

Cheers

Royston what is wrong with you, my meaning is this. I though that you could read between the lines

New car 99% have their new car serviced with the dealer
How long are you keeping itIf someone is only keeping the car for say 3 years, they usually keep the MB service up for a better re sale value
Do you love paying £110 plus vat per hour, many do not like paying that for a learner to put some oil in the car
Are you rich or are you poor Some folk cannot afford that price for such a simple job
Do you value the info that a good indie will give you while its being done
. Many that go to an indie get loads of tips re the car in general, indies do not tell you your brake disc need replacing when they are only ⅓ of the way through their useful life plus much more on this type of thing.
Do you like to drink coffee and see nothing through a glass window Some just love this side of it all
Would you rather know nothing at all about any servicing. Many do not care or understand a thing about motor cars and are totally green on such matters and they believe anything
Is the car 6 years old or more When a car is 6 years old there is nothing at all to be gained by going to a dealer, the car sells for what it is.

In fact I hate having to pay anyone to service my Mercedes, I am a good engineer in my own right, I can re build engines, gearboxes and differentials.

I bought my V70R at 1 year old, its never seen a workshop or been serviced by anyone else than me. It runs perfectly, never had an advisory on a MOT,it value of say £2k max and it does not matter one bit that it has no service history at all.

The government introduced the bill that allowed car owners to have a much cheaper option when it comes to servicing,, Not much is done on most services I can assure you.
