JBerks,
No this was not caused by damage.
The problem being the alloy is coming off in small strips from every
wheel in similar positions. Caused by a badly constructed wheel or
moisture/salt attacking the wheel and probably both
therefore in my opinion i think i have a genuime case for a warranty
claim
But thanks for your opinion
Having just had a warranty claim passed for paintwork I'd also be very suprised if they'd process it due to road salts etc. However your best bet is to go to your local MB dealer and ask the question, make sure you have your V5C (reg document) and service history because they will not process and claim without these being present. Good luck and I'd be very interested to see how it goes. I have mine going in for a respray on the 30th so please post an update if you have any joy.
Damage is difficult to identify. A pin prick chip in the laquer could do it. Remember wheels are being constantly battered by grit and dirt so it doesn't have to be kerbed to be damaged and the chances of you seeing the damage is minimal. Wheels are often damaged by garages removing them, chpiing the paint around the centre cap or wheel bolts. Add in the effects of wheel cleaners and road salt and you have the perfect recipe for corrosion. Our jeep's wheels were a real corroded mess and the chances of kerbing a 235/70 equipped car is pretty low. However you don't say where the corrosion is or how old the car is so it is hard to say.
The Mobilio claims are generally related to issues with water based paints on 98-2002 cars - these did not affect the wheels. Aside from that. Mobilio actually covers corrosion from the inside out - e.g. what Japanese car doors used to do a few years ago. So, technically I still doubt youd have a case. Howeveer, depending on age and service history, MB are very good with goodwill repairs so its always worth asking.
One of the main causes of damage to alloy wheels (kerbing excluded) is the practice of knocking wheel weights onto the rim to balance the wheel. I always ask the tyre fitters to glue the weights onto the inside of the wheel.
This topic reminds me of the same problems encountered when fitting number plates by garages the results being only too evident to see. I use the plate holders supplied by MB to solve that one.
i am having mine changed soon under the 3 years warranty the laquer is peeling off in strips i took them to my dealer he photographed them and sent it off to mercedes and they came back and said they would replace them but they want the wheels back so they can analyse them he said they make ask for a small payment but thats something i will argue if they do come looking for one
i have the 5 spoke 17" sports upgrade for c220 cdi 2005
hope this helps if you need anything else mail me at shaun@shaunriley1.wanadoo.co.uk
I included a claim for alloy wheel replacement with my previous claim for corrosion repairs to the body. Mine is a 2000 car and my claims were submitted last year. The body repair claim was accepted, the alloy wheel claim was not. The reason for rejection was that alloy wheels have a limited life and are regarded as 'replaceable' items and are therefore not covered under Mobilio. However, they have a 3-year warranty and if they have suffered an unreasonable amount of damage in their short then MB may entertain a claim. If damage is due to how the car has been treated then MB will more than likely reject any claim.
