Moblio and Corrosion question

Hi,

I have a 53 plate Mercedes C270 CDI Classic Se Auto with approx 35,000 on the clock.

I bought the car about 8 months ago from a non Mercedes dealership, for which I did not receive any service history documentation.

8 months on and my beloved C Class is beginning to show signs of rust in 3 places:

the corners of the bootlid that meet the rear windscreen
the driver and passenger front wings and doors

The wings and doors have small verticle lines where the paint seems to be splitting right next to where the seams of the front wings and doors meet.

My father has had his Lexus paint work repaired by Eastern Western Mercedes in Edinburgh, for which the price is justified by the quality of workmanship.

However before I go and spend my hard earned pennies on repairing the paintwork, can anyone confirm their experiences with Mercedes dealerships and the corrosion warranty?

I suppose what I am asking is do you think my local Mercedes dealership (Newbridge, Edinburgh) would consider repairing the paintwork under the Moblio plan although they did not sell the car to me and that and that I do not hold the full service history of the vehicle?

Many Thanks
John

In the absence of more knowledgeable advice, I would certainly try at the dealers and see what there reaction is. They may even be able to help you with the service history if it has been carried out within the dealer network.

Have you tried contacting the previous owner re the service history?

5 years old, and with such low mileage it probably only had two or possibly three services so worth a try.

Good luck!

If all else fails, write a letter to Mercedes head office at Milton Keynes, they will forward this to Holland.I did this with my car 2000 MY W203 220 CDI.I had some work done under the warranty, then I found some more.I was out of the two years since last service and my dealer said no.It has only taken a couple of months but Mercedes have come back and said they will repaint the bonnet under warranty.I do have a little bit on a wheel arch and a rear door, which I am happy to do myself.Give it a try you will find Mercedes very helpfull.

Hi,

Thank you for your replies.

The dealership phoned the previous owner for me, however he never received any documentation for the car either. The first owner was a company director- however I have not contacted them. It may well be worth spending a few pounds on aquiring the full owner history from the dvla.

I have spoken with Mercedes Edinburgh, however they said that the dealerships do not have access to each others service history information. I will speak with the dealership next time I'm passing and will ask them if they would consider my car under the Moblio warranty. Failing that, I will contact Mercedes in Milton Keynes for their consideration.

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind Regards,
John

a 53 plate C class rusting in those places is unusual. Factor in the absence of history and I start wondering about it's background.
It may be worth having the paint thickness checked by the dealer to ensure all is well first. That said, they will do this as part of lodging a claim. No dealer has ever asked me for a history before lodging a claim and anyway at that age, as rust, (assuming the paint was put there by the factory), shouldn't be there whatever the service history. So I wouldn't think you'd need one.

Hi Jberks,

Thank you for your reply.

I have had the same concerns regarding the background of the car aswell.
However has been mot'd and has had an adhoc Service B at the local german car specialist, with no major faults reported. A/c has been recharged and is working again, and 2nd key supplied and programmed.

Please see the attached photos of the rust spots in question, please excuse the dirt, white is a hard colour to keep clean for long. Upon closer inspection, someone appears to have tried to touch up the verticle lines on the front wings and doors. Bearing this in mind, do you think Mercedes would consider repairing under the corrosion warranty?

I would welcome your thoughts and suggestions...

Kind Regards,
John

Rust Lines

Sorry to be a prophet of doom, but I have to agree with Jberks as to the car's provenance.......have you tried the magnet test on the rust lines at the wing edges? To me, these look suspiciously like the rusting edge of a previous repair where Cataloy meets metal.

The problem on the boot lid could be due to the lid having been propped on its corners during the painting stage of a previous repair. As well as boot lids, I have seen this on bonnets where they have been removed from a car for repair / painting.

Hope you get your problems sorted out satisfactorily, but some more info as to the car's history from previous owners might help you decide what is the best way forward.

Best regards,

Ernie

Looks a bit dodgy to me too. Mercs of that era have been known to rust in certain spots but those look unusual to me, especially the lines. Very reminiscient of previous cars that have been repaired.
Anyway, we can guess all day. The dealer will be able to tell if it's been sprayed in seconds with their depth meter. Put you mind at ease either way and pop in and see them. They're quite friendly and will give you an honest opinion.

You might as well forget Merc at Newbridge. I took my wife's A170 (with a good MB history) in when the bonnet rusted. It was obvious that the paint was inferior but they wouldn't even consider a claim and they hadn't even the good grace to let me know. The guy at the body shop who inspected it was really rude as well.

Trade it in for a Lexus across the road.

Hi,

Thank you for letting me know about your experience with Merc Newbridge. I spoke with a service manager on Monday, he kindly advised I should go to the Eastern Western coachworks in Broxburn to have the car assessed etc, as the dealership are not involved in this process.

I will book my car into them for assessment, as nothing ventured is nothing gained and at the very least I will be provided with an estimate for the bodywork repairs.

Many Thanks,
John
