A cautionary tale for people in Ireland with modded cars. No wonder people don't declare and ignore the pitfall of no cover in an accident.

This lad is hard up right now, scrambling to get cover over the next month.

You think the insurance game is difficult over here. At least there is some (perceived at least) solid competition in the market.

I've often read posts on here, driver's complaining about the cost of motor insurance in the UK...and wept......Here in Ireland, Insurance in general, and motor insurance in particular, are legalised banditry. Its a common occurance to hear someone say with a sigh of relief " Whew !!! I got it this year for under a €1'000"" They ( the insurance company's) are under investigation by the EU for cartel behaviour. Personally, I bought a 2nd car for running around in. Beautiful car, 1993 A6 1.9 tdi Sport, ex-UK. Insurance in 2015 was €320....fine, was in line with the insurance with our other car. Fast forward to 2016 insurance quote. € 1'200......Justification for increase? I only had 1 year's experience with this car...conveniently forgetting the 30-40 claims free previous years. Like I said, legalised banditry,,actively condoned ( or at least not acted against) by the Govt, legal eagles, medical etc.

Yes, couldn't agree more. Motoring in Ireland is shameful.. the tax situation is equally as bad... and it's very possibly going to turn totally dire if you have diesel come next budget.

What's shameful about the above post too is.. they are totally soft mods (Suspension, pardon the pun!!).. not like we are talking about bored out engine or huge turbo kind of thing.

No, does not matter unless all of the i's are dotted and the T's crossed as per original manufacturers description,,,Tough Luck. Any deviation, or even perceived deviation from "Normal" and they will be rubbing their hands with glee. Oh, but it has already started, (the budget discussion's, I mean) here is a sample:
Quote:-Earlier this year the Tax Strategy Group proposed creating 20 VRT tax bands instead of 11 currently, partly driven by a new emissions testing regime across Europe. This would significantly boost the cost of a new car, with many cars falling into higher bands than at present. Figures from the Volkswagen Group, for example, showed that such an approach could increase the cost of a new car by as much as €10,000. Mr Murphy said the Government now has an ideal opportunity to encourage the switch over to greener cars" UnQuote.
Understandably, this goes completely against the recommendations of the SIMI, who want a reduction of taxes on cars to help stimulate sales...and they are threatening the Govt with legal action if they proceed with their proposed tax plan. So we are living in interesting times....but one thing is for sure, if this Government Coalition breaks up ( ant thats far from an impossible idea..) then the greens will be given short shrift in the next election.
