Does anyone lese think MB have kind of shot themselves in the foot? They changed the model names a few years ago to "simplify" things as people were confused apparently. It became nice and straight forward in general, so you had an A Class, then the SUV version was prefixed with GL and the coupe version with CL giving the GLA and the CLA, however now they have decided to use EQ for electric ,so you get the EQA, BUT they also want to do an SUV version so that's now the EQA 4-matic, and the C Class only has an SUV option at the moment known as the EQC (and about to be followed by the EQE), so what will the saloon versions of the C and E class be called? (and of course there's still the little "e" or "h" after the engine size to indicate hybrids and plug in hybrids.

At least it's nice and simple though and not at all confusing...

I've never been able to keep up. I put it down to senility but if someone else feels it too maybe it's not.
neither can I get a handle on all the engine and gearbox number or even the model numbers (w218 etc)

Mind boggling comes to mind when car makers come up with model letters and numbers....maybe they should use less of the letters BS when coming up with a huge array to confuse everyone.....well me anyway! Hehe :)

Maybe someone, MB maybe, could publish a list. I found this from Wikipedia but it could be improved on.

They lost me when the numbers stopped telling you the size of the engine. My wife has a 2 litre GLA250 and I have a 4.7litre S500.

At least not as bad as Audi now with 30. 40 50 etc which gives an idea of the power ????

Your S500 should have a 4996cc engine like my SClass?

Model names are confusing now. Just go with the car that fits your needs. The model no on the boot is secondary.

Not in the W222, Its a 4.7 biturbo
S470 doesn't sound as good as S500 does it

It's like the AMG cars, the C63 was a 6.2L but now it is a 4.0L so should be a C40 which really sounds rubbish and any owner with a C63 probably wouldn't want to go to a C40 and the C43 should be a C30 (which is a Volvo).

The A45 should be an A20 and then what do you call the A35

My ML 350 is 3.7L  The chaps and chapesses at Mercedes seem to have quite a long track record of using irrelevant numbers on the boot.

That should be a S55 surely??
Nope, only AMG models get a two-digit engine/ power designation.
In the US they went for 550 vs 500 just so the cars appeared more powerful than the rest of world sales…

Id a thought S550 would be applicable here too???....its all confusing...ive got brain ache now!! Hehe!! :)
My SLK280 is a 3.0 ltr, they did that to differentiate from the SLK350 and not take sales from the 350.

They did similar with E280CDI and E320CDI - even though both had a 3.0 ltr engine

They also had 1.8 ltr engines in 180’s 200’s and 230’s for awhile…
