Probably you guys are sick and tired of this question but I’ll ask again anyway. I’ve inherited a 09/04 W211 E320 CDI Avantgarde saloon on 17” twin spoke alloys and sports suspension.

It’s got 245/45 R17s – Pirelli P Zero Rossos all round. I’m getting too old for the road noise, the harsh ride and the ‘mind of its own’ steering.

What can I do tyre wise to improve the ride while keeping the 17 inchers?

Any advice appreciated.

ps still got an E300-24 on lowline suspension – my best car ever. Still goes like a train. Went from that 7 years ago to a CLK 320 coupe – my worst car ever!

Thanks if you can help on the tyres.

I do not fine the Rosso's noisy or harsh on my SL, but the Dunlop SP 9000 is a softer ride

Help with C220 CDI coupe tyres

Hi, this is my first reply to the forum - its a great read. My issue here is the wear on the rear tyres - currently 225x45x17 Continentals - at the best they are doing 20,000 which I reckon is poor. I'm not a tearaway driver and do lots of long motorway trips. I'm really pleased with most other aspects of the coupe, now just exceeded the 100,000 mile mark at 30K per year. Mileage is great, averaging 51 to 55 mpg (manual gearbox) even though the indicator says about 12 to 15% more than this. But more of this later on other pages!
Previous tyres - Dunlop I think but can't remember, were no better at 19k on the rear.
So, my question is, what do I get next for long life?

Tyres - Arghhhhh

Very gentle driver, had a Volvo S60 T5 and got 22,000 miles from the front and 42,000 from the rear. The E320 gave me 14,000 on the rear and 22,000 on the front with the first set of tyres. Very gentle on the brakes too and done 11k with the latest Contis on the rear so far but don't think I'll get much more than 14k again:( .

I have put NCT5's on the front and they are quieter and more sympathetic to uneven roads (still pulls to left though). They seem to be wearing a lot better than the contis and will try them on the rear next time.

Not sure why but the only tyres I ever good good mileage from were Vredesteins on my E240 (well over 25k and had plenty left when I sold the car). Everything else (Pirelli, bridgestone, conti etc ) <20k - may have been a fluke though.
The budget Federals I put on last year are now up to 14k and seem to be doing ok, good for a couple or 3 thousand yet, which kills the get what you pay for argument as they were 1/2 the price of the bridgestones and will have managed the same mileage with no noticable drop in grip. Quieter too. Actually the bridgestones had an easy motorway life, These have had to do stop-start.

I have always said a car is only as good as its tyres and brakes and have always paid for what I suppose is considered the best - or manufacturer recommended. I suppose the way I drive these days is far more sedate than I used to  so I think I on reflection will give the lesser priced brands a try, after all the higher priced branded tyres may cope with the heat a little better and have greater grip in the wet at speed but we don't get the chance to drive a car properly these days!!!

My V70R has a huge appetite for rubber, the best so far on that are Dunlop 9000

I only purchased my W211 E320CDI in March. Travelled around 12000 since. I'm going to try Michelin's Primacy's next to try and get an increased wear/higher mileage. I'll let every one know how I get on. Steve.

In tyre tests the Vredesteins Ultrak regularly comes out top. I am using Avon ZZ3's and am particularly impressed with the low noise, ride comfort and grip, however economy is down slightly. about 1mpg over 3000 miles. The improvement to ride is the biggest change.

If you do some research, you will see that the big brands do not come out a the best choice - when you buy a so called premium tyre, you are paying between 15 - 25% towards advertising and marketing

Make sure you get the newer HP version. I've got those on the back of my C270CDi - I struggled to 20K (all motorway crusing) on the original Bridgestone Turanza ER30's - the Primacy HP's have done 10K and still look new. I run them a couple of lbs below the minimum pressures in order to try to stop the centres wearing faster (normal on RWD cars), but if you do this you have to be careful to increase the pressures if the car is going to be loaded up.

They are available in the size the OP asked about (I realise that was some time ago). If you have access to Costco then they're about as cheap as you can get for Michelins.
