So, going through the long long list of faults with our new clk230k convertible that I swapped my rusty high milage 210 cdi for.

So far we have identified a faulty roof hinge switch which is on order, a knocking from the back, lots of sprayed over rust and covered up accident damage.

Along with A window regulator that wont normalise (Despite replacing it) and numerous other things.

Although top on our list at the moment is the smell of petrol.

It is very pungent in the boot area, and can still be smelt with the roof down! It has had rear end drivers side damage, and the filler neck isnt central in the hole for it. I suspect the tank itself is damaged, as it can only be smelt when more than a quarter tank is in it.

Any thoughts?

Look all over the tank and any leak will look like a black patch, you do have return to tank lines

Will give it a go, is the tank under the back seats in the 208?

I was thinking that somebody maybe hasnt connected the return lines correctly...

Hi,
Jack the rear driver side wheel up remove the wheel and inspect the petrol hoses/lines that can be seen as there is a 6-8" rubber hose not far below the level of the fuel filler cap it can be seen in this area, that if it has any perishing at all will make the car stink of fuel, it can be replaced without getting under the car
I have had the same hose perish on both my 202s requiring replacement, the symptoms in both cases were exactly the same as your 208, and as a 208 is the same as a 202 I would start here.

+1 for checking the hose - gives the smell of a petrol leak without the drips. Had the same problem on my first W210.

Many thanks, I will give it a look, I will be happy if its something simple like that :)
