Another good reason why I went for petrol on my last car change. However I guess it's only a matter of time before petrol engines get a hammering too

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
As usual its down to the interpretation of the testers opinion as to what gets passed when in a grey area.

"Commenting on the changes, RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “While on the surface this change, which is part of an EU Directive due to come into force in May, seems like a sensible move, we fear many motorists could end up being confused.

“Rather than MOT failures simply being black and white, the new system creates the potential for confusion as testers will have to make a judgement as to whether faults are ‘Dangerous’, ‘Major’ or ‘Minor’."

Looking at the new rules and how they are open to interpretation I think I’ll buy a car trailer there are likely to a lot of cars stranded at MOT stations requiring transportation

I'll carry on using a test station that doesn't carry out repairs.
At least there they have incentive 'not' to have the vehicle stuck in their parking area.

Other changes to the MoT test include the addition of a check for reverse lights

So, will the failure of such be a 'Minor', and therefore a 'Pass', or a 'Major' and thereby a fail. I can understand it in some ways as with our European cousins importing their own vehicles and then [if they ever bother;)] re-registering them for UK use, then there is a likelihood that where there is a left/right, reversing light/high intensity rear light positioning, there will be a mis-match to UK compliance. From reading numerous forums, the French are very tight on this.

I don't know the current MOT rules on 'all bulbs working' but I'm sure that I'm not the first person to check that all lamps are working prior to taking a car for an MOT, only to find that, when tested, one has failed. Or in my specific case, it was a 'dirty' contact in the the bulb holder, which I was permitted to correct.

Broadly, I am in agreement with the changes. The existing 'common perception', following a failure [presented early], is that, "I have x weeks whilst my current MOT is still in force, to get it repaired." By introducing the category of 'Dangerous', is indicative to the owner/driver, that there can't be any 'pithering about'. The vehicle got there. It will probably get back but, beyond that......
