An excellent insight into MOT failures and from looking at the statistics brakes are the biggest cause of not getting a pass certificate.
I had a bit of a rant on another thread on the forum about DIY brakes repairs for those who had never tackled the job before and it looks like it was well justified.

Driving around in a car capable of over 100mph and weighing up to 2 tonnes with bodged brake repairs is not what we want on the roads, I stick by what I said, in that if you don't know what you're doing leave it to the experts......Lives are at risk

great so my little KA is safe in the knolegde that it stands a 1 in 3 chance of failing an MOT and as mine did this year first time I have failed with a car in 10 years.. it was a coil spring broke ( S**t roads round here ) I am not alone with 19,602 people with a 2002 also failed with the same problem :lol::lol:

all fixed now bTW

so that's 19,602 people with coil springs at £25+vat Trade price each that's a lot of money !!

My Porsches are not even on the list !!!!!!!!

but a 71 911 only has a 12% chance of failing :)

Hi,
Excellent link Malc, it can also be seen to see how many are particular model cars are still on the road, I know this doesn,t take into account SORN cars but still reasonably accurate.

Thanks Andy thats what I found,, now in a few years time you will get a fair idea of how many 124s are still left not forgetting the C43's that are of little interest to you

VOSA has been forced to release the details of MOT failures.

This could be useful as a check list before you go for an MOT.

The Mercedes Benz pages are 525 to 694 in this link, ( Please allow it to load 6.8mb )

Really good info Malcolm,

I've just had a quick glance through the MB pages and it seems that around 80% of the failures involve Lights, Tyres or Reg plates.

Why do so many people waste time and money like this when a simple visual check will tell them it is definately going to fail the test.

You leave a few obvious easy-to-fix faults, in the hope that the MoT tester will overlook the rusted-away chassis sections

I take your point :) but I still don't agree, if you can't be bothered to replace a bulb when it blows, this means the rest of the car will have been neglected also and will demand a closer inspention.

If you drive to Uig there is a single track road behind the hotel, follow that road for a mile or two and you will come to Faerie Glen, a magical place if ever there was one ;)

Number of bulb failures is shocking - especially on cars with dash warnings.

Brakes - wonder how many of those are rarely used parking brakes.

Mine passed today :D

Then the owners have more money,, in some years to come we can see how many less there are around,,increasing the value of the ones left

Just had another look and compared 1998 202 failure rates against Vectra/Mondeo rates. Merc = mid 20%'s vs mid 40%'s (even Honda/Toyota rates are in the mid 40's).
