This is a great idea - how about an MOT every 10,000 miles, or 1 year, which ever is the longer period,
But some remobiles will be having an MOT every couple of months. I had 24v Senator that the service book (remember them ... no stupid electronic version) showed that it was having its 20k mile service every 6 or 7 months.

Seems like it’s good for some and not for others. My e class does roughly 1000 miles a year but still goes for a mot yearly . If cars are doing 12000 to 15000 plus a year should have a yearly mot. My car would do 2000 miles in 2 years so for me personally it would be a good thing every 2 years. I don’t think for one minute it will happen tho.

I was amazed when I heard this, seems a bit bonkers to me especially if they're trying to get older high pollution cars off the road makes no sense at all to me.

It gets people talking… that way they’re not focused on something else…

It's not a good idea IMO simply because of the amount of cars already running around with defects. Let those defects go unattended for 2 years and a lot more incidents like brake/suspension failures are likely.
Doesn't affect me personally, I keep on top of work needed but even I can't inspect the brake pipes hidden under plastic shields. That is what an annual service should be picking up.

This must be another lunatic idea from Grant Shapps who has no idea what life is really about. We have already got Cyclists taking priority over tested, taxed and insured drivers, what will he come up with next
Great British Railways, the Shapps Williams Report. ;)

Dont really see the logic its only £40 saved over 2 years, what price do you put on safety?

It should stay as is.
How many people do you know who have no idea about cars (beyond driving). Once a year helps these people keep their cars roadworthy. How often do you see advisories and the MOT tester saying xyz needs doing before next MOT.
Just looking at the cars now on the roads they are in good nick - testament to a good annual system.

They've not given a thought to how many businesses would be ruined by halving the number of tests done and denying garages the subsequent repairs.
Anyone who thinks cutting the number of tests should go on to a few US based car sites are see some of the horrors they drive around in and ask questions about how to fix.

A lot of other countries already have there versions of an MOT every two year, I'm split between being grateful and wondering how many dangerous cars will not get fixed.

When I lived in the States, we didn't have a car inspection and this was great, many car owners there at the time kept their car in relatively good order except for me, drove about on steel coming through the tyres until I had a blow out  To be honest I never even suspected I was even driving about in a dangerous car. Totally need 12 month yearly inspections :(
