Mouse damage

Has anyone else ever had a mouse chew up some insulation in their engine compartment?

And if so how did you deal with it??

Never had that problem mate but if you clear any rubbish that lies about your garage and set out some poison that should get rid of them.

Yep, I had that on my Lexus Soarer. The fekkers ate all the foam insulation in the engine compartment so i bought a cat... no trouble since.

Also had mice eat all the rubber insulation around some wiring in my house once. I lifted the floorboards and all that was left were 2 strands of copper wire feeding the ceiling light in the room below. Somehow everything was still working too.

That's absolutely terrible, I hope you managed to get rid of it!

I'm just relieved that other brands have the same issues - I was expecting Olaf Maxwell to comment about how all Mercedes have terrible mouse problems in recent years and that other marques have mouse-proof insulation or on-board mousetrap systems.

I have no garage - the car lives on the front yard. I'm guessing the mouse found the car nice and warm in a cold snap sometime this winter.

i had a rodent once enter the boot of the merc c200 and it chewed up the tool kit cloth and made a mess.
it also the burrowed into the foam of the back seat upper cushion and built a nest in there.

i was lucky it did not chew up the wiring but it left droppings everywhere in the boot.

my impression was it found a warm spot in winter.

my brother had worse luck when a rat decided to make the engine bay its home
one day when he started the car and drove off,he heard a loud back from the bonnett.
the alternator warning light came on and to his horror he found minced rat in his engine compartment!!-the rat had got caught in the pulley belt system and dislodged the belt as it got minced up!

he had to call AA home start to get his car back on the road but he was left with abig mess to clear up in the engine bay=-the cause of rats in his engine bay was the neighbour in his shared drive had left black bags with food in the shared driveway and a rat decided the engine bat=y was a warm place to set up home in winter

Oh ... that kind of mouse!!!

Hi All

My computing background made me view the title of this opening thread in an entirely different light.

I thought, mouse! ... what, as in PCs? The little, oval control that sits in the hand and moves the cursor on a computer display? It's not as daft as it may sound because I use a computer to monitor the performance of my car (onboad diagnostics, OBD). Mouse damage in this context could be marks made on the facia by the PC mouse as it scraps across the surface.

After reading the entire thread I now I realise that everyone's talking about the 6-inch hairy thing that frightens women and makes them scream.

I thought modern cars had Cat's anyway so why keep a moggie in the car? Puss in boots!

Oh, it's been a long day.

REGARDS Phil

Its quite a common problem. I remember my Fiat dealer years ago telling me about mice mangled up in timing belts, of course the belt would break and wreck the engine. Also quite common to find them eating wiring and insulation materials. One car I had did end up with mice, eventually found them under the back seat. I reckon an electronic mouse deterrent if you garage the car is a worthwhile investment.

Thanks Sue, I will certainly feed them but are they used to sleeping under cars?

Thanks for this comment - I will check the boot and seats for nests!

Thank goodness the mouse didn't chew any wires when it was ripping up insulation in my engine compartment. That's such a relief - I assume that kind of damage wouldn't be covered by the warranty.
