Hello all,

This is my first post, and relates to a '93 W124 280E ('amber indictors' vintage).

I was quite surprised to find that the indicator stalk is on the RH side of the column - just like all British cars of yore. Is it at all possible to convert this to a left-hand mounting? My other half finds it a bit difficult to adapt as she drives a fairly recent vehicle with indicators on the left.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum, to change this over is a massive job,it will need a new slip ring on the steering column a new indicator stalk and shroud.

All very expensive.

Thanks for the quick reply, Malcolm. I suspected that it was a bit of a long shot, but thought there was a slim possibilty that a different model might be adaptable.

Still, at least there's nothing on the LH side - so no operating the wipers by mistake!

It would, however, appear that many cars do have an option to completely remove the indicator stalk..... :)

I think you have it wrong. BMWs come as standard without indicators. They are available as an option but most owners prefer wider wheels, a bodykit and a stereo that goes tsch tsch tsch instead.

I suspect it's because there is a risk of getting your red braces caught in the stalk. :)

Umm...The hardest thing is going to be getting the steering wheel off.
Have attacked the steering wheel retaining centre nut on my 1990 W124 with a 1/2" airgun, then tried my big 3/4" airgun. Abused it at 90psi for along time. No movement, nothing...

Good luck.. If you get it off in one bit, let me know how?

Interesting. I note that all the newer Mercs have their indicator stalks on the LHS of the steering column. I very much prefer having it on the RHS and was one of the additional 'benefits' of buying the W124 for me.

If anything, I'd want to know how to do the exact reverse to you: swap a lefty to a righty :)

Mine came off without too much of a fight.

I used a big jack handle through the wheel (with a mate on the and off it) and a big(ish) breaker bar on an allen bit to crack the bolt.
