I am currently running a 300E sportline as a daily runner and being as before this car (which i am totally in love with by the way) we ran a 220cdi 203 and a 211 320 cdi and i find it a bit thirsty on the fuel situation.
Most of our driving is only around town and alot of starting and stopping so i thought i might get a w124 200/230 estate (we miss having the estate option as well)to use daily and just keep the sportline in the garage.
Would there be a big difference in fuel use?

They are only a touch better,, I had friends with a 230 and it did 25 ish so not a large difference,,its all due to the high gearing of the 124 cars, so dont go spending £1000's to save £200 per year on the fuel difference

Lovely wife ran our 89 230e for a couple of years and to be honest it was only a couple of mpg better than the 320 coupe.
It could be made to go quite well, but made a lot of fuss and bother doing so compared to the 6 pot motor.

Mind you, better ride and build quality on the pre facelift cars in my humble.

My old 250TD gave slightly over 34 mpg, would pull up tree stumps but struggled against milk floats off the line! No comparison at all in performance to the current W210 E320 CDi, yet less than 3 mpg better (31.4 for the current car).
MUCH cheaper to run in other respects, though...

In the 230TE we get 23-27 around town and 30-33 on A roads and motorways (not exceeding the limit)- about on par with MB official figures- according to which the 300-12 is 3-4mpg approx worse, with a manual 'box with either engine a 3-4 mpg benefit, except around town where there is no significant difference. Comtempory road tests were never kind to the manual transmission though

Mine turns 20 this spring. Done over 20000 in it in the past 18 months. I love it to bits and it is great fun in the snow as well as when the weather's good. Thanks for the hello television.

I fitted wide wheels and tyres to mine when I lived in Sweden and it was un drivable, the tail end just slid around in the snow, fitted spikes in the end :D I wonder how many other cars will last as long,, they are the big favorite on here

Funny isn't it. Sticking with low pressure and (comparatively) skinny tyres meant it was smoothly passing all those BMWs with high pressure low profile tyres in the snow last week. On one hill I saw four stuck, two struggling and a bad smell of clutch - but I can see how it might be fun with spikes!

The when-needed 4WD feels like unnecessary luxury until the ice comes, but then having it when required really makes sense. The kids laughed when I drove up to school, no problems, then went straight over on the black ice when we got there and I had to use my feet instead of the car to do the last hundred yards. Great car and feels like it might have another 20 years in it yet.
