Hi, I’ve been away from the site for a while as both s classes were replaced with 730ld and A8l but now I’m looking at replacing the bmw for an estate and I would like to know what the difference is in the real world between the diesel and hybrid (looking at 2013-16) also any major problems with either that I should be aware of? Thanks

I had a 2014 E300 Hybrid from new, I don’t think there is a huge difference in mpg, getting the best mpg from a hybrid requires use of sailing mode which is a knack you get used to feathering the throttle.

I went to France a couple of times and topped 50 mpg on their lovely autoroutes.

I did not have any problems with the hybrid systems on mine but John Laidlaw on here had one and did.

They are extremely complex cars and could be expensive to maintain.

I would steer well clear of the hybrid, very flawed mechanical prospect with only a few with no problems -
Another on here recently the poor chap has effectively written off.....
Robin was one of those lucky ones
Would you consider a 350 though- best engine of the lot and just slightly more thirsty

As stated. Stay clear of hybrid and 4 pot tractors, sorry clatters, no I meant to say engines are best avoided. 350 or nothing.

Or even better, stick to other brands. I’ve had nothing but problems in the last 3 years with 2 cars.

If you are looking at the last of the W212 series E Class then they are well sorted, 350CDi would be my choice with ILS and Premium plus pack

Haven’t had problems in my current 212, I think it’s a very sorted beast in it’s latter years...

Not a good recommendation then - I have had over 47mpg out of my 350CDI on a long run on French Autoroutes :)

So good advice from John, as usual!

Yes I get around the same from my E350 Bluetec but the E300 was not that much better on a run but certainly gave better mpg in urban use particularly in summer when the hybrid drive works best.

I'm not sure that Mr. Filipov's advice is the most rounded !?!

I have had 5 so called 'tractors' and found them to be reliable, economical and (adequately) powerful.
I am sure that the 3.0 litre diesel is more powerful and probably sounds nicer but that comes at a price of higher purchasing, depreciation and running costs.

So, back to facts, on my S212 E220 CDI Estate I am averaging 35.5 mpg over the past 7,500 miles (1 year). That is a relatively low mileage p.a. and mostly short runs -- school, shopping, etc. with some runs interspersed (80 - 100 miles).
There were a couple of longer runs and on those where two thirds of the miles was on motorway and the rest on short runs we got just over 46 mpg.
Those are real tankful to tankful measurements and not from the overly optimistic on board computer.

Kind of negates the fact. I can do a 400 mile run, 200 in each way and both times return 48 with 3 people in the car.

Adequate power id again a personal preference. For you a 220 might be plenty, but for me going from 350 to a 220 is not an option. I am even considering going for a BiTDI Audi next. Even more power

At the risk of sliding into the 'mine is bigger than yours' argument, I would ask you if that MPG number was from the on board computer or a full tank to full tank calculation?
I find the on board computer is about 10% - 15% optimistic, i.e. The OBC displays 38 or 39mpg which is a real 35mpg.
That said the car is economical to run.

On any motorway run my E220 will show > 55 mpg and my C220 (same engine) has shown > 80 mpg (see the photo)!!??

Hi,

On the E220 or E250 I should also add that my E220 is the SE model with 16 inch wheels. It is more comfort focussed. A friend of mine has an E250 Sport which is lower with larger wheels and a firmer ride.
I don't have any knowledge of the E300 hybrid.

D0D629C0-B245-49B6-979E-F9EF5685EC7B.png Mpg for our E220 W212. Ignore the three 70mpg spikes, these are spurious due to SWMBO mucking up the fuel receipts...
