hi ppl (new here)

i used to have a p reg s-class on 20"s and loved it but it was our "shopping" car and as the climate have changed recently it had to go, and to not go to the audi stable (nnoooo), i have thought about a A-Class as the spare run around car for myself
and misses.

so the question is i have seen a 1.9 avantgarde on autotrader, in the REAL world how good are they on MPG, as the tech specs say 36-37mpg combined, this would be fine as the S was 21mpg. and our other 2 cars are around the 17-21mpg mark also.

would prefer a 1.7cdi but it seems you can just throw a grand on the price for one of those and i need a semi-auto or automatic.

my dad has a rover 75 and the tech spec on that said 36 but his only returns 28mpg so this is what has started me thinking

thanx in advance

Welcome Lotus!

MPG is a frequently aired issue here. My own view is that, for short journeys on a cold engine no car will deliver the utopian numbers suggested in the official figures.

Conversely, when cruising long distance at motorway speeds, large cars frequently exceed expectations - you may have found this with your S?

The best I have ever had was a Peugeot 205 GLD which spent a lot of its time taking me to and from my commuter station (3.5 miles) in freezing winter weather and never went below 52 mpg.

The worst I have seen was our neighbour at the time who had an 850 cc mini for identical use (different train times unfortunately) who got 16 mpg!

I would go for the smaller A Class diesel, automatic. I suspect that will be as good as it gets, unless you go down to a Peugeot/Citroen/VW/Skoda 1.4 CDI.

thanx for the reply alex.

i cant do the french thing (my friend and garage owner would kill me lmao), really wanted the a-class as i assume there are as reliable as the S.

but if the combined figure was 36-37mpg on the A then it would be fine, anything is better than the low 20's mpg lol.

i have had gas guzzlers most of my life so this whole issue is new to me ad the misse will not drive a small car, it was bad enough trying to convince her to get a a-class (she drives a 410bhp supra,,,,quickly lol)
