Hi all,
My daily commute is around 90 miles of which 85 is motorway cruising, the remainder being 1st/2nd gear traffic jam.
Now I'm looking for a comfortable diesel automatic.
I've found a C250D with 106k miles at a reasonable price but want to know what mpg it's likely to return.
I'm in Ireland where tax on a 2.5l car is over 900 euro so the diesel is gonna have to pay for itself in higher mpg.
I'm currently averaging 38 mpg in my 1.8 petrol.

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

C250D should easily beat 38mpg.I would hope it give you something in region of 45- 50 MPG depending on how fast you drive.

Why dont you try to source a C220CDI, That will up the MPG quiet significantly

Not sure of the exact figures, but the 250 was more about performance than it was economy. If you're trying to improve on 38 - which is better than I average on my 100 mile daily commute in an E270cdi - I'd suggest a C220cdi would be a better bet. That said, if tax rules are around CC rather than Co2, you may be better sticking with petrol - maybe a C180/200 - they'll not do 38 though.

Most of my driving is 65 - 70 mph in the morning & 55 - 60 mph evenings.
However, I can be stuck in traffic for up to half an hour, hence the desire for an automatic.

I'm currently driving a Mk2 Golf GTi & also have an old Porsche 924 for weekend fun.

Whatever car I buy next will be for comfort & economy while commuting.

Fun & sportiness I already have aplenty

:)

GOLF GTI MK2 I had one of those until earlier this year. Let me tell you something, do not expect Mercedes auto to be any fun compared to GOLF GTI.

Anywho, I think the best bet in that case is nice C220CDI with full works

Depend on what you have to spend aswell?

used to remember driving over to my grandparents in belfast when they were still alive and it was cheaper to drive from belfast to the south and fill up with deisel then back to belfast rather than fill up at the end of their street !!!! and that was legit deisel not even slab murphys !!!!!!!

Hi Damncar,

Was in the same situation as you. Fuel economy wise, another vote for the C220 CDI Automatic.

The car's specs report ..

Average Notional Fuel Consumption, 6.2l/100 km
City, 8.8l/100 km
Highway, 4.7l/100 km

In an 8 year old car with 165000Km on the clock, I hit these numbers +/-0.2 of a litre/100Km. I cruise on the motorway at between 100 and 120 KM/h typically.

100Km = 62miles
1 Litre = 0.21 gallon [Imperial]

I'm delighted as I get well in excess of 50 miles a gallon and have the comfort of a safe car on the road.

Interesting piece in paper the other day where it compared Petrol to Diesel. One of the cars compared, bmw, took about 25 years to show any savings using Diesel over Petrol. Other comparisons showed savings started after about 5 years. All based on new cars where car price and difference in fuel price where used.

Those comparisons are often done with diesels that cost more than the petrol equivalent -so it takes time to pay for itself. But MB diesels are the same price or less than the petrols and so they save straight away. And last longer. And cheaper to service.

The other thing to consider is we are only talking of the difference here of a few MPG. The difference of running my 500 over the 320 and say 6k per year is around £200. and multiply that out over say 12k miles, that is £400 so if you spend say £5k to save a few MPG,s that would take you 12 years to recoup your money

Thanx Jackwall, I haven't come across a C220 cdi yet, however there are 2 e220cdi's for sale quite close to me.
I'm hopefully taking a look at them this weekend.
How do they stack up against the C-Class models.
Both are 2000/2001 models...

regards to all

Thanks Malcolm,
The cars I'm planning to view are both E-Class 220cdi's...
What is the preferred rad, Behr or Valeo?

Highly debatable. Common rail injection systems can be quite faulty. Longevity is probably a given, Olly knows of a e270cdi thats done 470k.

However in the USA there is an S500 (W220) thats got 670k on it so big petrols can last too.

Longevity is a complex thing but general cars last longer if

a) serviced regularly and correct oils used
b) given long runs and don't do short trips
c) driven relatively sympathetically

Behr is good, valeo potentially catastrophic. If you're looking at 2002-2001 cars then its a W210 E class you're looking @. Check for rust. The W211 is a much better car than either the W210 or the W203 C class (the ones you're looking @)

For the sake of £200 one can change it, I would not turn down a good car over this

I just clocked my old C250D on a run back from Cornwall, averaged around 44mpg which I didn't think was too bad.
