My 190e 1988 is ticking!

Hi My 190e auto (1988) is ticking very loudly and it's getting faster (the ticking) - any thoughts - also, my key is stuck in the ignition - I can start the car - I just can't get the key out - once again, any thoughts???

does the noise disappear when you press the accelorator pedal ? could be your cam shaft chain needs replacing, common when the car has high mileage

as regards the key, are you certain that you have it in the turned off position ?

Hi - it just ticks all the time as soon as it is started and the key is just sooooo stuck - i can get it pulled out about 2mm but that's it!

I pressume your trying to remove the key with the gearbox in park.

Hi my 1990 200e ticks too - its because the trip meter is stuck and clicks every time it trys to count off another 10th of a mile. Looks like a 'mare to fix though so I'll live with it I guess...

Might just be the valve lifters ticking. It's a common fault. Or the timing chain as anyweb has said. Try and listen where the ticking is coming from with the bonnet open.
