I have a 2000 year Mercedes A Class 160 Classic. I have owned the car for the last 5 years and in that time have only recorded 13,000 miles (35,000 in total). I have now been told that I need the whole of the Steering Column and Steering Lock replacing. In addition to this both the rear Trailing arms are worn and also need replacing. Are these known probelms to this a class - like the Drop Links on the front??? Please help, because I can't help thinking I am being ripped off!

You are looking at the mileage and thinking it shouldn't have gone yet. The opposite is true. Low mileage usually means it has spent most of its time stop/start/low speed/menouvering on poor local roads - hence it has encountered more wear than an equivalent 90,000 mile motorway car that has sat in a straight line, over smooth roads whilst warmed up. Exhausts on low mileage cars generally give up sooner than high mileage ones, brakes and tyres wear more too.

However, if you are unconvinced, then get a second opinion. Who says they need doing? Are you having problems or is this the just view of a profiteering MOT station?
