Paul, the parking brake is probably going to be stuck on. When you have it running you may have to rock it back and forth in 1st and reverse to release it. Good luck :)

Paul, my W124 had been parked up in a wet, mucky farmyard for four years when I got it about 3 years ago. Look back at my posts since then and you'll see how little its cost me since, and how I'l no regrets about buying it. It is a smashing old car. I actually feel guilty for abusing it as I do, but it was bought to do a workhorse's job, and it has to be the best of a string of other estate cars I've had to do the same job over the years.

Why, I might even throw a party in it for it's 20th birthday in February... But no, Malcolm, before you ask, I won't invite the ferrets! ;)

Paul, yours belongs on the road, and the only thing to strip off it is the dust and grime!

Bit of an update. Got the V5 through finally last week and took a trip to MB at Glasgow to buy a key. Apparently they get cut in milton keynes. After presenting my V5 and driving licence, i was lightened by £30.10 for a new key and im currently waiting for their phone call to collect.

So i started on the car itself. The back o/s tyre was totally kaput after being flat for the last few years. So i fitted a new tyre and replaced the trim, levelling out the front end now the back is level.

Took the battery off and charged it out of interest, and it held a charge! As above ive got a lock set waiting so intentions are to get the key, get the battery on. Im going to buy a nice new set of plugs and a rotor arm then get some fresh petrol. Take the filter off, little bit of petrol in the carb and see if it will go.

One mega bonus for me is that the handbrake was never on - never. It activates and releases fine.

So then i moved my attention onto the car itself to make it look as if someone owns it. I found some cleaning products in the boot along with a ice scraper. I physically had to scrape the dirt off with a window wiper after dowsing it all with window cleaner. Then i got a clean cotton rag and redid it all with more spray cleaner. Will do for now but when i get it home ill treat it to a wash and polish.

On a downer someone finally nicked the badge off the front.

Some new photos:

I would replace the petrol-into-carb with squirts from a can of easy start in via the air filter box - less likely to flood/wet the plugs and easier on the battery.

Should help get the engine to catch quickly and therefore suck and access fresh fuel a bit quicker.

(air filter might well be full of spiders etc anyway so needs looking at first - cheap!).

I would also plan to replace the fuel filter after running down the first tankful as there will probably be a fair amount of gunk caught in there. They're cheap and easy to do.

.... too many cars!
Just to hijack your thread for a moment, my first Mercedes was a 1989 200TE manual and I found the gearbox superb. As she clocked past 200,000 miles I modified the levers and changed the bushes in the shift mechanism (got a bit sloppy) and it was lovely to drive. Did the same on a friends 250D manual and he loves it.

Thanks. You can have your thread back now

Hi no problem, im a rover man so im used to knackered union bushes. for some reason rovers refuse to go further than 100k without sorting the union joint on the gearbox out.

thanks for the tips, ill have to go out and get some easystart. as you say it would suck the petrol/gunk through a bit quicker to get it fired up.

Be very careful with the Easy Start - you could easily blow the head gasket! Seen it happen on a diesel engine before. Also don't get into the habit of using it as engines can become addicted to it! ;)

They cant become addicted to, its a engine, the problem is, that fault that was there in the first place, was never correct and the car would only start with a sniff,

Fix the fault and the car would start on its own again!!
