They carried out a diagnostics test and nothing untoward was found at all. I told them this was because I turned the engine off before I left it with them, had I left the engine running (as I had wanted to) then the shuddering wouldn't have stopped as a result of having to turn the engine off and maybe they would have found something.
So now I am back to square one :(

I would have thought that a Star Test would have found the problem as the shuddering would appear to be un-even engine running related which Star would highlight on the diagnostic report. Some of our good Indies on here will be possibly able to explain this better than I can.

Hi KTH, unfortunately I don't know what equipment they used and they were not a Merc specialist. The reason I didn't take it to a Merc specialist was because the nearest one is in Milton Keynes and I am in Luton and they told me I would need to leave it with them overnight and if I had taken it up there I would have had no transportation in order to get back home!!!

So I took it to a very garage that a good friend of mine recommended, they specialise in tyres and exhausts, tracking and engine diagnostics.

Hi Bazzer so if they had used Star and there was no shuddering you reckon it would have shown up anyway? I.E. It wouldn't have had to have been displaying the misfire symptoms in order for a diagnosis?

I would suggest that you have to be pretty selective in who you get to look at a 98 Mercedes. Anyone can plug in a code reader and get a series of fault codes- however it takes experience to interpret /read them correctly. Did they simply look at stored fault codes or look at live data? If a car hasn't had previous fault codes cancelled then there are usually some stored codes [ which makes me question the complete lack of stored codes?] Having deleted any stored codes the next thing is to run the car till the problem occurs and then read the codes again.
ps this actually means there are many Mercedes main dealers who may not have any staff who have worked on that vintage of car!

Hertsmerx are in Letchworth and not so far, these cars do not marry up that well on STAR but it is usable.

Mercedes (or an Indie) may be further away, but would certainly have given you a better diagnosis. As it is, you're not really any wiser now . . .

sorry dude...but why would you think a tyre garage will be able to diagnose and fix your MB?...you need a local MB indie or you will continue to waste money...

I am sure if you do a search of MB indie garages on here , you will find a recommended one...

Have they got a bad reputation then?

I've no idea what reputation they have, but when I'm ill I go to the doctor's, not to the baker's shop . . .

(If you see what I mean . . . ) ;)

^ +1. Good advice above.
Malcolm recommended a good indi' in Letchworth, Hertzmerx. I wouldn't waste anymore money at a tyre and exhaust centre if you are looking for diagnostics.

Hi mate, its not really a tyre garage only. Like I said they specialise in many other areas of car related problems. I reckon it just so happens that as my car was not misfiring when they carried out the diagnostics test that is the reason why nothing showed up on their machine.

I very much doubt they have STAR, so I think it's safe to say that they found nothing because they don't have the right equipment.

There should have been stored faults.
