Ha, what is it with CL500 ownership! I've done the exact same thing but with a Comand 2.0 unit using a TV-on-the-go module but linked to a multi-drive (CD-R/DVD/USB/MP3 etc) in the boot, I did have an Alpine satnav dvd unit linked to the screen hence the reason for the TV-on-the-go module so I could see the sat nav while moving but went back to the DX sat nav with latest maps as the screen resolution with the Alpine nav unit was not too good.

I tried brown carbon fibre wrap :p but ended up "skinning" all the wood with real carbon cloth and epoxy resin, a lot of work!

Even tried a wood wrap but 3M don't make a Di-Noc wood finish wi the air release channels so it was almost impossible to remove all the air bubbles and the colour was too light compared to the original Merc dark walnut. Sorry but no pictures of the real carbon finish. :(

Great rebuild. One thing that I would be cautious about is having the car sit on 4 axle stands though.

I would prefer one axles resting points to be wider displaced, particularly at the front and probably on wooden blocks.

Yes they do look a bit narrow, I was concerned how stable it would be so left the wheels on and threw my not inconsiderable weight at the car, I actually tried to push it off the stands, and believe me it was rock solid, they are 3 ton stands and do have a wide base, the drive was laid by me and is level and has a proper sub base... I left it for several days before getting underneath... no way would I have got underneath it had I not been totally confident.

Did think of the later one but they are a bit pricey still, you could have used the later console and switches, they are a direct replacement, agree with using the TV in function, the quality is always way less than ideal and I can see why you changed the brown carbon!!!... would like to see pics of the real thing though.... I did think about it but it seems an awful lot of extra work

Awesome work.

So do you want to sell up? And start a new project? LOL

Hi

All those interior shots were a bit closeup so took a couple of wider ones, I do think the carbon goes well with the perforated leather in mine

And some awful news......

My ABC pump is leaking, it's a drop every five minutes whilst running, so not a massive amount but enough to mean it needs sorting, so next job is to get it out, it looks like it's coming from behind the front pulley so it's not the pipes..... No lights on yet and it's still working as it should so hopefully nothing else has been effected.....

I wonder if the shaft take a standard seal

Read a post on a USA site where someone said they changed it but speaking to the indie I use now and again he says he tried and they couldn't get the pulley carrier off the shaft, it's not pinned, has no woodruff key or any other obvious sign of attachment, they recon it's pressed on and you have to take the pump apart to get the shaft out and apparently thats not a DIY job.... found a place in Germany that will rebuild your own unit and give it a 24 month warranty for about £285.00 so not too bad.... I'll get it off at the weekend and have a look....

Hi all...

As mentioned I found a company in Germany who specialises in the ABC system and offers rebuilds of all the components at reasonable prices, my pump worked OK but was leaking from the front seal, they are

Exclusiv-automobile

http://www.exclusiv-automobile.de

Before removing the pump I flushed through the system with 6ltrs of oil, I did change the oil some time ago so it wasn't too bad but decided it wouldn't hurt to do it again...

I took the pump off, it's a bit of a pain to do due to access, but not too bad. Most of the bolts are star drive so you need some star drive sockets, the two banjo bolts are 22mm and 19mm, I took off the air inlet pipe and the radiator fan to help with space, then I siphoned out the reservoirs and removed them.

This is the pump in situ.

This is the 22mm banjo for the power steering outlet from the pump

This is the 19mm banjo for the suspension, this bolt doesn't have crush washers, it uses two rubber "O" rings on the fitting itself, this is bolted to a resevoir at the bottom of the pump, I got the pump out with it in place, but you can remove it to get more room.

These are the two banjo bolts, the suspension one has a mesh filter to catch metal should the pump destroy itself, luckily mine was clean

Here it is off the car,

I wrapped it up well and sent it off, it cost £17 to post it to them in Germany, it took just over a week from sending it to getting it back, the price was £285 incl postage and it has a two year warranty.

Whilst it was away I spent some time cleaning up the mess the leak had left, looks like it was leaking for sometime looking at the state of the aircon pump, the engine undertray was filthy as well but it was only in the last week that there was a puddle when you stopped!!!

Before

After

I also took apart and cleaned out the reservoirs

The insides

Also did a bit of engine bay detailing.... oh alright getting rid of more rust around the spot welds on the turrets... stripped out various bits then treated the rust and sprayed it with silver smoothrite, it's virtually the exact same colour, looks different in the pics as the light changed but it really is a good match...

Before, but after removing some bits

After

Didn't take a before of the other side but it was pretty much the same, now looks like this

Got the pump back looking like this, had new bolts holding it together and you can see how the front pulley has been seriously heated to get it back on.

Refitted it, which again was a bit fiddly but wasn't too bad, refitted the reservoirs and all the other bits, it came with instructions to just fill up the oil and start the engine, if the ABC warning comes up then pressurise the reservoir with an air line and start the engine again, I had to do this, I wrapped the end of my airline with tape until it fitted into the dipstick hole and gently pulled the trigger till the plastic reservoir expanded a bit, my good lady started the engine and it immediately worked, no light came on... I used the raise/lower button 30 times to pump out any air then flushed it through with 6ltrs of clean oil, now the oil looks like new, I also changed the filter.

Took it for a test drive and I do have to say the ride is much smoother than it was and the steering is better as well, I guess the old pump wasn't working at it's best after 13years of use....

Checked for leaks.... None.... yippy.... then refitted the undertrays after cleaning then all up....

Prices

Pump rebuild £285
Postage £17
New crush washers and o rings £10
New filter £20
12ltrs oil £100

So not too bad when you hear of some of the prices people pay for a new pump and I've got two years warranty rather than one from Merc...

Just booked the next outing for it, in September we are driving to Venice, going to stop at Cologne for the first night (Oh look, that's very near the Nurburgring... might have a lap or two!!) then down to Munich for two nights, may go via Stuttgart and take the old girl home, then onto Venice for two nights and then work our way home, maybe stopping at the Lakes... got the hotels and time off booked so all set..... It's about a 3000mile trip so I have a few things to do before we go, one being new rear tyres... oh fun!!

Hi all,

Last few things done before the week away, got two "as new" rear tyres from ebay, 265/40/18 Goodyear F1, was going to buy new but had a look on the bay to see what tyres are available in that size, saw these two that had done less than 1000 miles, seller had loads of feedback at 100%, said he was selling them as just after he bought them new he was offered a set of 19's, he'd paid £220 each for them and I won them at £122 for the pair!!, turned up very quickly and they were as described, over 7mm of tread and no marks at all on the sidewalls.. so a few pennies saved there...

Changed all the steel brake pipes on the Merc, they were starting to go rusty, was a bit of a pain to do and a bit annoying that they used such cheap pipes on what was a very expensive car, still they are all in copper now and have new stainless braided flexes. Also changed the fluid for Dot 5.1 the feel of the brakes has improved greatly with that lot and the new discs and pads all round...

It's had a good clean and polish and is sat in the garage waiting for the off on Saturday morning...

I'll try to remember to take some pics....

Thanks for the comments guys, glad you like reading it...

Been real busy since the trip so haven't had time to post, we did ten countries in seven days with two days of no driving,

Started in England, then across from Dover to France, then Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and finally Luxembourg.

We did 2,640miles at an average speed of 67mph and did 24.7mpg, and I'm pleased to say the CL didn't miss a beat the entire way.

First day we drove from Hull to Dover, then the slowboat across the channel, into France, across to Belgium, through the Netherlands and into Germany, first night stop over was near Cologne on the Saturday night.

Up early on Sunday and headed for the Ring... at £25 a lap I decided that we would only do one, (I'm a southerner but have lived in Yorkshire for too long!!!) must say I was very impressed with the circuit, some lovely fast sweeping bends, I did a fair bit of youtubing before we left and actually managed to remember a lot of it, took it easy for the first few K's then opened it up a bit for the rest of the lap, Deb said she even enjoyed it and she doesn't like cornering real fast (funny girl) she said she only closed her eyes once!!! The brakes were getting very hot by the end of the lap so we pulled straight off the circuit and drove 20 miles to cool them off.... Then the autobahn to Munich, it was Sunday so the traffic was light and not too many HGV's. The CL is limited to 250kph/155mph and it was nice to prove this!! it actually pulled really well to 253kph before it slowed and kept that speed, wonder what it would do with it removed. It was rock steady with no issues. It certainly does eat up motorways....

We spent Sunday and Monday night in Munich and had a good look around the city, found some very nice beer and food, while the Merc had a rest for a day.... it was the week before Octoberfest but we still managed to try plenty, the wheat beer was lovely....

Left Munich Tuesday morning and headed south, through Austria and then a mountain road into Slovenia, stopped in Ljubljana for lunch but couldn't find anywhere at all remotely close to the center to park, so headed out the city and ended up in McDonalds for lunch!!!!! Then headed for Venice, into Italy and the driving gets fun, they only have one rule on the road, if you're in front..... you win!!! join in and it's kind of fun, Got to Venice and parked the car up for another day off, got a 15min water taxi ride to our Hotel, as I'm far too lazy to walk 1/2 mile to the waterbus stop, then wished I had as it cost £70 for the Taxi!!!?!?!??! Everything about Venice is great, it's just a magical place, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there, did all the touristy bits and again ate and drank well... we had a helicopter ride over the islands which was great fun.

Left Venice Thursday morning and headed up to Lake Como for lunch, found a nice bar overlooking the lake, then we set off for the Sustenstrass Pass, after much reading this is supposed to be a nicer driving road than the Top Gear Davos to Stelvio road.... I have to say the Merc is no sportscar, more a Grand Tourer and it's too heavy for the quick direction changes these switchback roads are full of.... so it was just a gentle drive but did have some spectacular views. We came down the North side of the pass and found a lovely skiing chalet to stay in with a very good cook and a great beer!!

Friday morning and our last full day, we just headed North, meandered around mostly off the main roads, worked our way up to Strasbourg then on towards Metz, thought, lets make the 10 countries then, so headed for Luxembourg, I booked us into a central hotel on my Iphone while Deb piloted the Merc... the hotel turned out to be very nice and had a rooftop restaurant overlooking the city so we had a very pleasant last nights meal.

Left the following morning and had a slow drive up through France to get to Calais for the 3pm boat, we always use the VIP service now, it's a little bit more but you get priority boarding and disembarkation and access to the VIP lounge where you get waited on hand and foot, free drinks and papers and no hoards of screaming school kids!!! It was then a slow drive back home.

All in all a great week, made some wonderful memories and drove some very nice roads, the Merc didn't miss a beat but was rather covered in dead flies across the front...

A few pics.... didn't take too many as I kept forgetting!!!! doh

A classic Venice shot

Venice Island from the helicopter

Lake Como

The top of the pass

The Skiing Lodge

Another beautiful lake in Switzerland

Sticker collection, Slovenia and Austrian carnet de passage bought locally on entering the country and the bottom one is the German emmision zone sticker which you can get before leaving the UK...

It is with a heavy heart that I have to part with it, had it for just over two years now, I had an operation on my back some years ago and it is not getting any better, just found out I have severe osteoarthritis in both hips so now have to sort them out.... Getting in and out of the Merc is getting to be quite a challenge and is in fact pretty funny seeing me fall out of it!!

Haven't been able to get more than two hours sleep since January so using the Merc as we did for weekend gettaways is no longer an option...

I did SORN it a month ago and planned to keep it for after the hips but it just doesn't seem right to let it sit... it needs to be used...

So it's up for sale, I've just MOT'd it with no advisories and put six months tax on it, it runs spot on and the bodywork is still superb with just a few minor stone chips.

You can see from the rest of this thread what it's had in the last two years and it's a lot!!!! Tyres, brakes, suspension, bodywork, interior, aircon, battery etc etc...

The only thing that I haven't fixed yet is the drivers heated seat, everything else works as it should and I got the MOT garage to stick their diagnostics on it to see if it had any hidden faults and it's all fine...

It really is a get in and use car, so if anyone would like to give it a good home then please PM me...

I would like £4500 which I think is a fair price for the condition it's in, but I do expect to haggle....

It's more important to me that it goes to a good home and gets loved and not neglected....

It looks just as the pictures in the thread (apart from the private plate) I'm just in the process of giving it a good detailing and will take some fresh pics but it will look the same... (May take a few days to fully do it as I can't do much at a time)

Thanks.....

I can't see any of the pictures in this entire thread. What a shame you have to sell it. I just bought a CLK or I would almost certainly have bought it from you.
