Not particularly bothered by this except that when wheels slip on icy slopes the ESP TRIANGLE in speedo circle lights up momentarily, so its maybe trying to work automatically, even though its not switched on, so could any damage result from it not working.

Handbook say's when switched on it should light up and go off until needed, which doesn't happen - it just stays on until i manually switch it off.

Would have preferred main beam warning lamp to be there, as it can be easily obscured by left hand on steering wheel.

On my 210 if you turn off ESP the warning triangle lights up and stays lit.
If I turn it on the light goes on but if it detects wheel spin will turn the light on until the wheels regain grip again.

Even with ESP off it will function to a degree beyond a certain speed.

ESP is on by default. When the light is off, ESP is on. When you press the switch, the triangle lights up to remind you that the ESP is off. That's the same of any car with what ever they call traction control or its derivatives.
