A friend of mine has blown the transmission on his W210, is this an easy replacement or is it effectively a write off.....

I was thinking the same thing???? Unless there is a damaged power train then surely a rebuild would be a decent solution???

But he might have been doing a fluid change, and he blew the cooler pipes, and that is better than sucking:rolleyes:

Did the fluid come out the tranny once it was blown?

Unless you can find a second hand transmission you'll be looking at the thick end of £2000 for a rebuilt auto-gearbox and that is from an independent repair shop.

MB quoted price was £4500 when my W210 destroyed it's gearbox and that was around 6years ago.

Sorry how you you suck in the fluid in this situation? Can you elaborate

As far as I know the car is driveable but is limited..... I dont know yet whether any fluid is leaking or was leaking. I dont know yet whether he was hammering it.

Well the car changes gear but it seems to 'slam' as though it's been hit up the back end

Then pump pressure incorrect maybe, not a common fault at all

Slamming between gear changes can be a precursor to total gearbox failure.
If the car isn't making any untoward noises when at idle then it hasn't got that far yet. My old E430 did exactly the same, but just 3 times before it completely self destructed.

I would get it to a specialist as soon as possible and not drive it in the meantime.

You could always make a dipstick (there's instructions in a thread on here somewhere), warm up the engine and gearbox and check that there is actually fluid in the gearbox.
