thanks all for your imput. removed secondary cat today and removed cat from inside. it had been roming free inside the system. Just had it a 10mile test run and what a difference. just going to go a real run and test and i will let you know the outcome. Did you all know that Mercedes are doing a pilot run call "Me to You" and as a result the visit I had yesterday was 100% free of charge regardless whether they get the job of repair or not. Thanks again all for your help.

hi
Latest update is that on the hills I was no where as quick as previously to the cat problem. So the only other thing I had done was the Air flow meter which was one off Ebay. I have now changed it for the old one which was picked up by a garage as having a low reading and the car is back to normal....so old flow meter is getting left in. All i did was take the Cat section down and and slice along the top welded part that runs from back to front with an angle grinder. then I sliced down the sides for approx 60mm. I then bent open the piece of metal smashed up the cat insde which had already been dislodged anyway and removed it. I then cut a new bit of steel then totally covered the bit that I had ground then welded it in. Took around 1.5 hours. Is it my imagination or is my ML 270 really quick compared to other 4x4's I love my Range rovers and I am due to change soon but I believe they are a lot slower and more thirsty than my ML even in diesel form. I would also like to know your thoughts on chipping my ML. Thanks again for everybodys imput you have been wonderful.
