Hi, I'm trying to Identify a Mercedes V8 that is sitting in my mates garage. I have no idea of its origins as it was here when he moved in.

The engine number, on a flat by the gearbox at the rear of the engine is

118 983 - 62 - 027353

Its a big V8 with direct fuel injection (one inj. per cyl), an auto gearbox, what looks like an aircon compressor, power steering pump and alternator. Its also still attached to the crossmember and engine mounts and gearbox.

The gearbox has 000 545 4206 and R115 271 4201 stamped on it.

We were just wondering what it was worth really and what car it was from.

Cheers

Scruffy

Well first off I thought it was a 6, but I didn't find any engine numbers matching that, so I thought it must be 8. Could well be a 9 though. I'll go and check when it stops chucking it down :)

Edit: Ok I had a look and it is definitely 116

Ah thank you :)

Is this likely to be useful to anybody? It's been sitting in the garage for at least 2yrs and probably a while longer before he moved in.

If it's not then I think it will get scrapped, but it's a shame to scrap an engine :(

I'd love to put it in my fintail! If you don't get any takers, I would remove all the ancillaries and stick them on ebay.

hmm that number has me at a loss "983" means its not a 119, and the 350 se is shown as 116-984 and 983 is listed as a 6 cyliner, but there is one number that it might be and thats 116 963 which is the 380 sel/sec/se from 1981-5, could be my books dont go back far enough only go back to 1976

i just bought a mercedes engine with the same number(116.983), but i am still not sure, after reading this forum, that engine it is. i know it is a 3.5l V8 mercedes engine with direct injection. am i doing a complete rebuild project of this engine. (at the moment it looks realy bad) i got it for a price that was soo cheap i couldn't resist. but i am unable to turn the crankshaft(you realy must have my english spelling exchused, it is not my langauge). so i have a pretty hard work in front of me. i would just like to find the manual for this engine, so that i know exactly where how and what, does any of you have a suggestion ?
