Whilst having a general poke about the car, 1991 300CE 24V, this afternoon, came upon this lot in the passenger footwell!

Now even I know the Blaupunkt amp relates to the stereo - if I replace the tape/radio bit presumably I'll have to ditch this as well...

Do the 2 bits to the RHS relate to the Scorpion alarm - the guarantee on the bottom RHS bit expired in 1990 - the supposed year of manufacture of the car!

Any ideas what this does?

Thought is might be phone related - have the nokia kit and ancient phone - although not yet got round to trying it out...

Your Amp is a good quality unit, 4ch in and 4ch out. just remove the head unit and there will be 4 loudspeaker outputs LF.RF.RL.RR. as long as you buy a radio head unit with 4 ch output, you can still use it.

re the RHS parts - one looks like it has a DIN style plug coming out - have seen similar on CD changers. Do you have a separate CD changer ?
If so, this could be some sort of the interface, but if it really dates back to 1990, unlikley as they were'nt prevelant then?

IF I had to guess, I'd put the top RH unit down as part of the alarm. I used to fit alaroms in the early 90's and many good ones came with boxes that looked like that. Ultrasonics perhaps.
The bottom one is a little odder. The din plug looks similar to one I had on a Pioneer amp around that time. Unless I'm mistaken there appears to be yet aonther box of tricks under those 2?

The bottom RH bit looks like the brain of a Nokia car kit, possibly a CARK-91 for a 6310i phone. It looks like there's a silver box under it with a multipin on it - maybe a Blaupunkt crossover?

Loads of room under the floor isn't there?

I agree with JBERKS it looks like a Scorpion alarm box.
Have you got total closure/remote locking? The Scorpion alarms fitted to some older Mercedes required an extra control unit for total closure (Pt.no.art.281/282).
If you,ve got remote locking could be unit for that.
Try this link (kindly posted by fellow forum member) for more details on Mercedes OEM Scorpion alarms.

I agree with Malcolm regarding the AMP but is,nt that a DIN lead going into right hand side of it. This i presume goes to the back of the stereo. Blaupunkt by any chance? and in that DIN lead would be the speaker inputs and AMP trigger wire therefore restricting the replacement of the head unit to one that has this socket (if you still want to use that AMP).
May be able to buy an cable adapter (bought one for a Kenwood stereo years ago) this would get you over this.

I'm pretty sure that it is a scorpian alarm.

One of the wires will be connected to the central locking system.

Looking again - I think the din plug goes into the silver box below the 2 black boxes so something todo with the stereo. I agree with Bolide - the bottom on probably Nokia and I suspect that if you pull on the black lead that comes out of teh bottom you'll find that it's been chopped and the end taped out of the way (I doubt it's joined to the brown one). Hence you can safely remove it and the speaker.

Is there a prize for this, BTW? Best remote diagnosis of period in-car hifi & security equpiment?

Should be :D most impressive technical knowledge..

It would appear then that its a mixture of Blaupunk stereo amps, nokia handsfree which apparently will work through the stereo speakers (really should try it) and the scorpion alarm... which was acting up (siren and hazards whilst driving and remote fob not working - switched it on an off again with the key and all seems well so far..)

The stereo is seemingly a rather sophisticated piece of early 90's technology, sound quality is much better than anything I've ever used in the past (which is not saying a lot...) however:

1. Is there anyway of hardwiring an Ipod connection into one of the inputs - I have a dead CD changer in the boot, and I've seen a lead somewhere online which will plug a small jack phono into the cd changer port somewhere.....

2. There is an engine speed related high pitched whine which gets obtrusive on quiet tracks (especially classical) particularly at motorway speeds. Any ideas? I have a voltmeter which I can just about use but no real ideas about where to prod...

I'll post a pic of the bonkers remote EQ which is on the end of a flexi tube under the steering column. Not one that caught on!

Cheers again

Your Blaupunkt amp is only an extention of the 4 outputs from the radio, you could wire in to two of the channels but not all 4 as these inputs are low impedence, if you do just wire into 2 channels you would have to use the volume control on the Ipod is there is not one for the amp. You would need a 2.5 or 3.5mm jack to 2 LS dins 2 pin

Alternator whine is always fun...

If you have a Blaupunkt eq on a stalk then that probably qualifies as "Old Skool" car hifi

Indeed... any suggestions how to get rid without spending a fortune...

It is the very same - took me a few minutes to work out what it was once I had noticed it... It has an irritating resonance at about 40mph on poor surfaces which makes it rattle a bit... I'm loathe to ditch it as it adds 'character' to the car

Forgive my ignorance, but does this mean that the ipod would only work on 2 speakers? Could live with just using the ipod to control volume.. I rarely drive any distance alone so my wife can co-pilot.

Could I use something like this : http://www.bluespot.co.uk/aux_input.asp

would be happy to ditch either CD changer or ancient handsfree inputs...

Thanks again for input.

The interference is comming from the cars alternator and ignition amp normally cased through poor placing in the car, the amp should not be near any module within the car, some times just moving it a few inches can help. Also the input and loudspeaker cables should not run along side ignition or live feeds. Maplin have a inline filter. You could try a 2.2mfd cap 250volt working on to the live feed to the amp.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/family_free_delivery/Extras.htm

This may help, but I do not like their products much.

You must take a look at the input plugs on the amp,I think that they are two pin dins, thats 1 flat pin and 1 round thin one, its a long time since I have seen one and the other end of the cable must fit your Ipod

Thanks Malcolm, will have a look at plugs and options next weekend, time permitting..

Strange that a top spec car would have a poorly installed amp.....

Cheers
